I really do hate college

So I started my first semester of school this year and I feel like college isn't for me. I really cant comprehend the fact that Im going to be doing this for the next 4 to 5 years just so I can get a good job. I mean don't get me wrong, I love crushing kegs and killing bottles of Bacardi but the school aspect just isn't for me. People are telling me that every freshman experiences this but I refuse to believe that. Any suggestions people?? Im kind of in a rough time and need some advice.

I'm in pretty much the exact situation. I go to Grand Valley State University in Michigan and live at home. I have hated it since day one so after this semester I'm dropping out and going to school to get my certification as an aircraft mechanic. If you don't like college don't go just because you feel like you're expected to, there's plenty of other options. Find something you love to do and pursue that whether it involves college or not.

I'm kind of going through that now. But it is my 3rd year and I'm a Junior. The statistics aren't in your favor as a Freshman either. But by the fact that you put that you liked the "alcohol" side of college leads me to believe your not taking it as seriously as you should be.

It may not be for you. But if your not giving yourself a chance, then it's a lose, lose, either way.

I miss college. I felt the same way my first year = this is a waste of money, time, etc. I transfered to a different school hoping that it would change my attitude but it didn't until my last 2 semesters where I finally saw all my hard work coming together and that I had indeed learned a bunch of crap. But now, Im bored and I feel like I'm just floating cause I'm not ready for a "family" or the job I have is not my intended career path. Grad school is sounding more & more entertaining the older i get.

some people just don't fit into the whole idea of college..not really a big deal either you tough it out or you find something else to do with your life college isnt a necessity to live a successful live even thought we've all been taught that from a very young age

skilled craftsmen are in huge demand right now because everyone and their brothers went to college instead of pursuing skilled labor..if you dont like college or are unsure that having a job with college as a prerequisite will make you happy, then look into a trade..you can make 6 figures easily

I'm on my 5th year of school, been sick of it since the third. You're still early enough on to make a different decision, but I just gotta sack up and finish at this point, no matter how bad it sucks.

I love college. I mean I have a shit ton of work everyday and a test every other day, but I fucking love that part of college too. My life is being a student, and it kicks ass compared to the past 18 years.

going through this in my first semester of my second year. just pushing through because i know i would rather be at school than back home trying to find a job and being bored all the time because everyone is at school.

skiing and partying while pushing through school > bored at home working for barely more than minimum wage

I really miss college. I loved the fact that I could hang out with my friends every day and not have classes until 1 pm and what not, but I also loved learning about stuff that I was genuinely interested in for the first time.

Look dude, if the career path you've chosen isn't for you, now is the best time to change it. but life doesn't get much easier than in college.

What aspect of college do you not like? My buddy went through a year of college and decided it wasn't his thing so he bounced and started training to be a master electrician

a few years later and even though he's still in his apprenticeship he makes a damn good living and in another few year he'll be his own boss and make more than me

College is hard if you are doing something worthwhile.  No getting around that.  If you want to do it, you have to work.  If you don't want to, it's a waste of money.  Simple as that.

i was just like you my first year, then instead of getting kicked out for not going to classes, ever, i dropped out went to a different school and found something i really want to do
for me it was all about motivation, i was going to school because it was something to do, not something i wanted to do
since then I've found something i genuinely enjoy and can see myself doing for the rest of my life and actually just 4.0'ed the last three semesters
my bottomline: look into other options. dont hold yourself back from what you truly want to do
do what you know will make you happy even if that is ski bumming out west til your 80

I am in my first semester of college and I am super stoked on it.
It is so much better than my high school in so many ways.

it does depend on where you are going to school, but getting a degree and being miserable for 4 years is better that getting stuck in a dead end job for the rest of your life.

College is really short. Think about it, you start around September 1st, and end what, mid December? Basically 3 and a half months, then spring, start mid January, end may so like 4 months, but spring break...... All in all, you are only in classes for what your credit range is, like 15 credits is 15 hours a week......and you get a lot of time off, like a month in winter, over 3 months for summer, breaks, holidays, etc

15 hours a week for college classes
high school=around 6 hours of classes a day (not including lunch)x5 days a week=30 hours


Yeah high school is easier work, but time wise, more class time.


Plus, in college, you should be taking classes for your future job someday and those classes should be interesting and you should like going to them. If you don't change majors/schools


And if you really wanted to, take summer classes, and graduate a year early if you really hate college that much

i'm a freshman too and i've been dreading the work load. i thought about transferring to an easier school because i hated all the reading and papers. but after thinking about it, it isn't that bad. when i get my work done, i can party like 3 nights a week and i'm living with my friends without my parents to tell me what to do. personally, i think it is so much better than high school and better than the real world where i need to find my own place to live, make my own food, have a job and other the other responsibilities that come with it. live it up

or he's just in a major for the money. I love my major, the classes I take, yea some of them the teachers introduction on the first day may have been, "Ya, this is the hardest class you'll probably have to ever take..." but fuck it. The college lifestyle is way better, and I'm happy compared to living at home.
To the OP,
Try finding a major of interest, I'm a Visual Communications Major- Infographics and I cannot think of another degree I'd rather be in. Before the hate comes for being a communications major, I'm in Scripps College at Ohio University, it's in the top 3 national vis-com majors and is pretty exclusive, class size is about 40 for each year. It's more or less the selling point for people to come to OU haha besides the Halloween reputation.

Im just gonna say don't drop out. If anything change what you are doing or go to another school. Im taking a year off right now, only a couple months in and cannot wait to get to school. You can't take learning for granted man, its a beautiful thing. Just find something you dig and get into it.

I had that problem my freshmen year. I hated classes didnt know why i was in school when i could be out making money. Find a major that interests you. I choose Advertising. Shit is awesome. Just start taking a wide variety of classes and try to find a major you like. Take classes that you enjoy, you finally get to pick classes instead of being forced to take HS bullshit. College is the best time of your life. Im in my senior year and so stoked that I am in college. Just find the right major and enjoy yourself.

I'm first year too. I don't really like most of my classes. I only have four, but they're higher level, like everybody has chem 103 or something and I have 111 and 115. The other two are history and spanish, two things I wish to have nothing to do with. That leaves liking 1 out of 4 classes right now, cause chem 115 may as well be called "statistics pertaining to chemistry 115" and I think statistics is stupid.

Gotta find what you wanna do, and remember your working hard and suffering (or maybe not) to spend the rest of your life working hard and enjoying it.

Storytime:
I like math, but I don't have a math course right now. Because of whatever scheduling nonsense that went down a few months ago, I got scheduled for a class I got credits for in highschool and had to drop it. A kid asked me for help with math homework and I was stoked. He said he asked the other smart kids on the floor and they couldn't do it, I stopped what I was doing and did it. Moral of the story: it seems the first semester and maybe the next, you take all the stuff you need to fulfill requirements or whatever they call them, then you get to take stuff that actually interests you. I think most schools like to believe in a broad range of education no matter what major you are, and so everybody has to take some classes they want no part of.

college as a system is just stupid man, spend 100k, get shit faced 5 nights a week come out with debt and a piece of paper... just so you can make some money a bitch ass salary of  40 thousand a year ( if youre lucky enough to find a job) doing something you don't really like in the first place..  I'm a senior in college and am more confused now with what i want to do with my life then when i was in highschool.

there's pressure from every direction to get a job, but I'm just trying to hang out next year.  Its pretty shitty that the world of academia makes you feel like an asshole because you dont want to be 22 and rush into the corporate world.  I sit in class listening to people talk about  how excited they are to work, and then i tell my teacher when we talk about our future I more likely then not ill be living out of my car skiing bumming next year and I get looked down on.  Why, becasue i dont wana be a suit and work a 9-5 in a 4*4 box, the worlds crazy man?

At the same time man this is the last few years where you have 0 responsibilities, honestly people stress way to much in college, never again in your life will you have it so easy (well for the most of us).  Even if its not every thing you want it to be make the best, have a good attitude, and realize that in most situations your life will be much better if you just put up with the 4 years.

So because you decided to fuck yourself throughout college, you can degrade people for their majors? A 4 year degree is a 4 year degree, which is all that matters for the majority of jobs. Sure, you'll have a more specific job area where your major matters, not everyone can be an engineer. I can't call you stupid, because you're not hahaha.

Oh, and part of one my chem 115 class is guest speakers every Tuesday night. They had some people come in who recently graduated and went right to working, they were chem majors. Two went to working with some company employed by the government for biological weapons response and stuff like that, one works at a biotechnology company and the other is gong to be a lawyer. As it turns out, law schools like chemists because of the way you think as a chemists; logically and analytically. They all said they liked their jobs, and for the most part seemed generally happy with their life. They found a good job now, but said they had plans for the future that may include more school, but they are confident that the company will take them back later after more schooling. The kids that work at the gov place get every other friday off.
