Backyard Hockey Rinks

Does anyone of you NS'ers make Hockey Rinks in your backyard in the wintertime? I have been doing it for the past 4 years and it's great. If you do make one, when the time comes around to start making them, I'll bump this and we can add pics of what they look like. I just make mine out of about 2 foot tall wood planks and a tarp. Some people actually get nice boards but I don't wanna pay for that.
Mine last year was basically just like this except bigger and it was in my backyard, not a field:

i saw a thing on the news about hockey day or soemthing in canada and they had a contest for best rink. all of them were like the second one.

I have a backyard rink, but its mostly my bros that use it, i haven't skated in a while. one of my dads friends has a regulation size rink tho, and another has a legit zamboni for his

I live on the water and every year my dad would shovel and flood a nearly full sized hockey rink for me. It was awesome and a lot of fun, but a looot of work.

make one without water. i have a friend who put a hockey rink in their basement using UHMW. his dad went out and bought it from a manufacturer and then basically laid the material down in the basement. you can use ice skates on it and obviously it doesn't need to be kept frozen.

I just rip the local town rink, we have those in Canada. It's better than almost any backyard rink around. I don't even snowboard or ski anymore, I'm a pick up hockey hero in the winter.

eee! i had one when we were kids! my dad always made on every year, and it was super huge, because we had a massive yard. i thought about making a jump or something two winters ago when there was about 6 feet of snow in my yard and my neighbours, and my neighbours were my close friends too. i should've.

I dont see how the synthetic ice plastic thing would work, but it would defeat the whole purpose unless it was too hot to make one. Do most of you guys live in canada? I live in the US in Illinois

i used to play hockey.

and to shibby...
it's a synthetic surface that is really slippery and about as close to ice as you can get. just google synthetic ice rink and you'll see the various examples. the one in my friends basement is legit, his little sister even uses it for figure skating.

While growing up guys that i played with had a pond next to their house that their dad would build boards (behind the nets) and water it every night and some mornings, it was as flawless as any outdoor rink i've ever been on. The quality of play was outstanding for unorganized games that would occasionally feature a young sidney crosby, along with a couple other guys that currently play in the nhl/ahl.

another kid had a regulation sized rink with cement and real boards, insane.

shes right, but it really dulls your skates, and it gets plastic shavings everywhere, kind of like the pellets from turf fields

my friend and his dad get really into it and they make one every year. Last year it was i believe 90 ft long by 60ft wide /claim ill try and get pics up
oh and the walls were like 8 ft

i didn't want to mention the downsides...also if you don't take care of it you won't get much use out of it, but i guess that would be the same for an ice rink too.

we were always about the pond hockey, cus there were a few ponds in the area that were perfect for it, and its just so much better when you have to wait for conditions to be perfect and you have to get out there and shovel everything, you feel so satisfied once you can actually start playing. and the backyards in the GTA are small so we couldnt fit a rink in there anyways

What the fuck is wrong with just using ice? It takes a weekend and is actually mega legit. Skating on plastic is gay.

There was a girl in highschool hockey from Campbellford that tried to show everyone she could play. First time someone hit her she separated her shoulder and broke her clavicle.

like 40ish, we had to stoke a wood stove 24/7 to keep the pipes from freezing. We also lived at the top of a hill so the entire thing was bulletproof ice, pretty fun to slide down but almost impossible to climb back up

I would kill to have a backyard rink.
curse this west coast climate.

the pond at the park near my house freezes every couple winters though so I'm not completely out of options, but this is one reason I have to be jealous of just about everywhere else in Canada.

It's wierd stuff. I have some in my backyard that I don't skate on but just to shoot around on and its like as slidy as ice (almost) but not slippery to walk on.

yay im not the only one!

my dad started to make a rink when i was 4, and weve been doing it every year since! im 19 now btw.

recently, my buddy and i have taken over.

so its 50by50 feet, has 4 lights(one at each corner), it has 2 feet high boards around the whole rink and then 4 feet high boards plus 4feet high netting around the nets.

i dont have the best pictures so ill update this thread when the season starts! also, if theres any montrealers who wanna come for a game or something lemme know!

those are sick. i would never make one though. i have a swamp right across from my road and it can fit about 3 rinks on it. have a small tourny every year. but this year it doesnt look like we are =(

I think it'd be so much fun to have one of these in the yard!

backyard rinks are so sick, and great for working on skills. I never had one, but I'm from Maine, and every other person had one, so I used to go over to my friends.

either that, or lake rinks. a lot of people live on ponds or lakes, so we just snowblow a rink, and bring nets down.

so fun, my favorite kind of hockey

thats legit, the netting is so key. we usually just shovel a big square on a pond so we always have to run everywhere in the snow to find the puck
