35mm adapter question

So I'm looking into buying myself a 35mm adapter. I realize that you get what you pay for but video is just a hobby for me so I don't want to spend that much. I'm looking at the CAM35mm CAMs adapter... I know its static and doesn't have an achromat and therefore won't be as good of quality as a higher end one

Has anyone here ever used one of these? I basically just want to know opinion if you have any or general tips on how/where to buy a 35mm adapter.

And before you think about investing in something like a 35mm adapter, remember that you can achieve the shallow DOF look with just general smart filmmaking.

Look around the forum for information. You may find that you're actually not ready for one, or that it would be too difficult to use, or that you'll do just fine without one. You should be well-educated before investing in such a finicky and narrow-use item like a 35.

I know this video is kinda lame and really slow paced but watch it a couple times/read the thread. You may find out you don't need one to get the look you want.

I have a canon vixia hf200. And my budget is like $150. Like I said, video is just a hobby so I don't really have any justification to spend more than that. Also I'm in high school haha... But I'll check out the links thanks man

So am I homie, and I went ahead and bought one. I love it - it's fun to use. However, you should still do your research before buying. I did.

having purchased 2 35mm adapters and used them a ton with my HVX200a, I would say you should definitely not buy one.

instead, I would use the money to start saving up for a DSLR, or maybe one of the video cameras with interchangeable lenses that haven't yet come out. i don't know a ton about those, but i do have a DSLR and I can tell you that while they do have their flaws, they are easier to use, look much nicer, and are way less of a hassle

yeah but you got an m2 for like $100 didn't you? I've done some research I mostly made this thread to get opinions on the one I posted in the OP. But this is probably more helpful.

And ^ my dad has a 7d I can use whenever I want basically, but that has a lot steeper of a learning curve. And I'm definitely not in the market to buy a new cam right now

haha come on man, i did just give you a magic bullet code. i'm not insulting your recent decision to buy a 35mm adapter for your hvx, that's a whole different story. you said yourself that you were at one point considering switching to a dslr, you must have at least liked something about the image they produced.

i missed the part about the $150, but i still don't think it would be worth it. a static adapter looks like shit, and that's basically all he would be able to buy.

also, yea i would say that a DSLR looks better than a canon vixia, even if it does have a 35mm adapter. an hvx with a nice adapter gives off a very professional, filmic image with shallow depth of field, whereas a cheap adapter on a consumer camcorder will look like a hipster polaroid half the time.

i don't see what's wrong with telling him to save up money for a far nicer camera than he has now rather than investing in a camera that he'll want to get rid of in a year anyways. regardless of whether it's a dslr, a traditional prosumer camera such as the hpx, or one of those hybrid things.

i'm not suggesting that you should buy the 7D, but I do want to say that the learning curve is probably much less steep than you think. with a 35mm adapter, you still have to know about exposure, how aperture affects depth of field, etc. not a whole lot more to know with a dslr as far as video goes. shutter speed, ISO and such are easy to pick up after a few days of shooting.
