Do you think the war in Iraq is a good thing? Are you willing to die for it?

The more I think about it, the more it becomes evident. If George Bush is re-elected, there is probably going to be a draft.

There is no way in hell Bush would ever think of announcing a draft pre-election, or even slightly hinting at one. Members of congress had brought it up because it is probably the only way to make the situation in Iraq 'work' But the bush administration was quick to silence them are reasure everyone that no, there would be no draft. Bush knows announcing a draft would be pre-election political suicide. But after the election, well what are people gonna do? Nothing, we are shit out of luck.

Previously, the draft was a noble call to duty, to defend ones country. Parents and Grandparents were PROUD to see their sons off to WWII, even hanging stars in their windows to commemorate a family member killed in action.

The draft became less palatable during Vietnam, when much like todays conflict in Iraq, the motives were sketchy, and a realistic goal not in clear sight.

Ask your parents, or grand parents if they would be proud of you if you died in Iraq.

Consider this, of all the childeren of the members of Congress, only one is on active duty in Iraq. In essence they said hey lets go to war, but no, not with our kids.

Piece it together, the armed forces are already spread thin, the reservists can't continue on fighting the fight forever. Today it was announced that 3,600 troops that were stationed in the boader region between North and South Korea are being relocated to Iraq. As currently projected US forces are going to be needed on the ground in Iraq until AT LEAST 2006, that is if the conditions in Iraq remain stable, but the developments over the last month and a half seem to point at anything but stabalization.

Do you want to die in Iraq? Do your parents want you to die in Iraq? No? Then you should register to vote, and vote for Kerry.

It's actually surprising how close we are to a draft.

Living in the USA, we all get a feeling of invincibility (see the above post), since we do in fact have the most powerful and technologically advanced military in the world. But that doesn't mean anything if we have so many troops deployed to so many different locations in the middle east. Our forces are stretched thinner than they should be, and that does warrant a draft.

The solution to altogether avoiding the draft would have been not to go to war in the first place... or, at least not try to take on so much opposition at the same time. Now that we're stuck with it, though... even Kerry might see a draft as necessary, in order to make sure we still have a strong reserve that isn't committed to the middle east. So don't count on him being a draft-proof alternative to Bush.

He's still the best choice for those with the safety of our nation in mind, though. Even for people who voted for Bush last election... I really don't see how voting for him again can even be an option. Iraq was and still is a total disaster. It's time to swallow your pride, look at the facts, and think about the future of our nation.

as of now the US is in political turmoil. even if Kerry get elected whats he going to do in iraq? he cant pull our troops out, he cant nuke em, his options are limited. because what the public wants to see done isnt what might be best for the situation Bush has put the country in.

for all those who think we have plenty of reservists and people willing to fight where are your sources? i truely would not trust any gov't website or even a national newspaper. our gov't has been known to give out false information in order to keep the public tame and happy with what they want to be happening. take for instance the supposed 'weapons of mass destruction' Bush never stopped skawking about. our country is in itself a lie and a never ending stream of media bullshit trying to mold the publics minds into what the gov't wants it to be.

Will we be another 'Brave New World'?

for our sake i hope some higher power smiles upon us and the rest of the world. because right now we're all fucked.

So you aren't 'motivated' to fight? Well, you could stay on the base and clean toilets, you'd be relatively safe there. Don't wanna go to Iraq at all? You can do that too, its called JAIL. Personally, as a Canadian, I hope there's a draft. The US is overpopulated, and forcing military age men and women to undergo basic training would just the thing to cure the raging obesity problem in the US. At the same time, all the people that came on here last year supporting the war will get to find out first hand what a shitstick Bush is.

I don't know if you noticed but the whole world is overpopulated, not just the U.S. Yes, I have heard a lot of talk about the draft and I am so glad that I didn't enlist in the service. Right now, I am in college, so I doubt I would get drafted. More than likely, the U.S. isn't going to send all of it's college students to fight. Anyone who is just working and doing nothing will probably have to go if the draft is started. It really sounds like it may happen.
And WTF is going on with all of this torture bullshit?! We are wasting so much time and money, when we should be focusing on ending the war. We can deal with that stuff when the war is over, it's not just going to dissappear from the records.
Yeah, i'm not happy with Bush at all, I personally think we need to change our system. It's not all his decision anyway, the senate votes on just about everything that takes place. It's not like Bush is running the whole country by himself. I dont believe that we should even have a president anymore.
Sounds like I should def vote for kerry though. The last thing I want to do is see myself or my friends to Iraq.

i bet there is going to be another draft becasue our governemnt is so stupid. if i am drafted i'm gonna do everything i can to get out of going becasue i am so opposed to the war. why are we in iraq anyways. there was no hard evidence of nukes or whatever and they weren't responsible for 9/11. we are pretty sure saudi arabians or afghanistanis are responsible...so why aren't we going into there anymore and searching for osama?...becasue there is so much oil there and it would hurt bush's oil business. i bet he's cashing in nicely from this war..

Whoever said that is a dumbass...... a large number of people in the war are from the army reserves.....weekenders who are being sent over there w/ inadequate training,and they aren't even given proper flak jackets,etc.
The administration has lied about everything leading up to and during the war.
The threat of terrorism is far greater now than 3yrs ago.......the so-called war on terror is an evil joke......Bush and his administration are the evil doers (sp?)and the biggest terrorists of all............prepare for the draft.

there will be no DRAFT. U people are insane. For one the public would not stand for a draft and two we dont fight wars like we used to, with huge amounts of soldiers in the field. Today its more about hi-tec weapons and highly trained soldiers. putting mass amounts of troops in the field just gets in the way.

First off, I would like to point out that the last just war Americans fought in was at the beaches of Normandy. Since then wars have come down to the dollar. Second, the rumor about a draft, is a rumor. We will know for sure as it gets closer to the election, but if the draft doesent become in effect it wil remain a rumor untill time carrys it away. Personaly, I think (or at least in my area) 18-20 year olds are to caught up in there lives to care about defending their contry.

During WWII there over 8 million in the armed forces by 1946. maybe its just me, but thats a bit higher than 101,000 or whatever it was.

And after the internet boom during clinton years it was necassery for us to enter a recession which he are on our way out of. Whoever the presidnet be next year the economy will be fine. And when u say our troops are spread too thin and at the same time say we are only focusing our troops on iraq you sound dumb. Because we have troops all over the world more spread out than any other country. ANd when a country expierience a disater who is the 1st country donating food supplies and troops to help the US. too everyone that keeps saying that we need to finish what we started...that sounds like the right thing to do, but did you know the vietnam war played out the same way, every new president that came into office wanted to 'finish what had been started' and get the troops out of their, but you know what happened? It turned into the biggest mistake america had ever made. After 20 years of saying we need to finish what we started the war did end, but after 20 years!

Don´t you realize that Al Qaida, who is responsible for the 9/11, are still planing new attacks against Europe and USA.
But they aren´t in Iraq, they are in Afganistan and Bush is taking troops away from there and putting them into Iraq.

So this war is a huge mistake and I´m sure that Bush is realizing it.

This war isn´t about fighting againts terrorism, it´s about revenge. This is Americas new vietnam for sure.

Canada and Iraq have nearly the same population and if the US cant keep Iraq in check they couldn't keep Canada in check either, in a purely theorhetical military matchup. I have a feeling that this whole bringing the draft back is to gain popularity for the opposing parties. THe american government is all about lying to the public to get them to think in a certain way.But if they do bring it back that I deem unlikely, they could never get public support for it. What i'm trying to say is, we are all on this earth together, and out of human stupidity we have become to overpopulated. Too many people means too many different opinions on what is right and what is wrong. It's impossible to keep control over everyone. This world is fragile, and some stupid person or groups of persons could destroy the world quite easily. i.e. a nuclear war, biochemichal warfare, bombing large cities, causing massive pollution.
Do you understand that??
Life can be easily destroyed all over this earth. The U.S. understands that so we try to keep everyone under control somewhat. So in order to solve this, all of the nations need to work together and help each other out. There is no need to rip on another country for reasons that are not in our control. If Canada WAS attacked for some reason (don't act like it's NEVER going to happen) Who do you think will help them? THE U.S.!!
It just pisses me off how all of these canadians think that they are in the clear and don't have to lend a hand when The US may need help. Don't count on me ever doing anything for your country if you are going to be so ignorant.
The Human species needs to work together in order to protect our habitat.

I didn´t say that you should start a war with North-Korea. I just said that those troops is needed in Afganistan and North-Korea. North-Korea and Al Qaida are the biggest thread to world peace.

for the people that say the americans will not stand for a draft...Americans will not be able to do anything about the draft because the average american does not have the resources to go to the government and get the draft stopped, and the families that do have the resources don't do anything because it is easier for them to just get their kid exempt from the draft, rather than fight a battle against the government.

So yes the americans will not stand for there to be a draft but they will not do anything about, execpt have a couple protests and make a couple of petions...but the government does not care about any of this.

They barly listen to intrest groups and the americans that are affected the most be the draft: poor people/working class. they do not have the funds to support an intrest groups that will get the job done.

thanks but no thanks. canada doesnt need the US's help, the US military is a joke. And its crazy cuz even a year ago I myself thought they were invincible. The US' bark is way worse than its bite. According to reports on MSN, the Mahdi militia numbers about 1000 total and there was estimated to be 5000 insurgents in Fallujah in April, causing 100+ US casualties.

Lets say you have 10 000 people, about the number of drunken rowdy males at a Flames playoff game. Armed with nothing more than semi-auto 22's and flaming Alberta whiskey, this rag-tag group could fight a successful guerilla campaign against 150 000 US troops plus tens of thousands of coalition troops, costing $5 bil a MONTH and lasting at least 2 years. Pretty pathetic considering the US spends more on its military per year than every other country COMBINED. The US has a pretty sappy military record anyway, goose-stepping into ww2 when its pretty much over, straight up getting spanked and crying home from vietnam and now crumbling to a bunch of fig-eaters with AK's and grenades. Bush should change the US national anthem to Metallica's 'King Nothing'.

221, the only enemy more deadly and unopposable than 10,000 Calgary hockey fans after a Flames Cup Win is the city of Vancouver after a Canucks Finals loss. And just as 221 said, Canada has no need of military assistance from the United States. However effective fearmongering has been in convincing you that you, personally, will be killed by terrorists, most of us up here are grounded in reality, and realize that noone will attack us if we don't give them any reason to. Also, noone will kill us if we don't go over to where they are and give them an easy shot. They are, additionally, far less likely to do so if we send them food and things of that sort rather than killing them. In fact, the only major reason other nations might have to be annoyed with us is our close association with the U.S. You guys aren't always a help as far as foreign opinion goes, you know. Canada is not going to fall victim to any attack needing military aid to repel at any point in the forseeable future. Ugh, 2am. I can't write at this point.

unfortunately, we have already given them ample reason to attack the U.S. The united states has always been the perfect scapegoat (justly or not) for all the problems that have plagued the middle east. When peoples are oppressed by totalitarian regimes who behead people for speaking out against their government, the focus of their rage becomes the omnipresent but never correctly represented United States of America.

Regardless of what we do now, the threat of terrorism still remains due to sentiment that has been ruminating in the minds of some radicals in the Middle East who have managed to convince the young and naive to do their distructive bidding.

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as: US withdraws from Iraq = threat of terrorism eliminated.

Yes, you are right. Canadians offer nothing to this world. They just sit around watching hockey games. When was the last time you ever heard about Canada doing anything beneficial? From what I hear, all they do is bitch about how stupid americans are.
