what do you think of the school thus far? good place for a skier/mtber? i'm visiting over spring break, i can't really get a good idea of it just from reading random reviews online.

Im gonna be a bit biased because it was my first choice, i visited twice ect. but
Its pretty close to sunday river, so plenty of skiing to be had. Not sure what the MT Bike trails are like up there, definitely get on campus though, for me once i got there, i knew right away.

I wouldn't feel too ashamed about Stanford, a kid from our(SteezeonStage) team who was 6:13, multiple nation championships etc. and 97gpa didn't get into Stanford either. The most important thing you should tke away from this is that shit happens, not everything is gonna go the way you want it to and it's your job to make the best of it. If I were you, I would try to transfer to UW-Seattle(on par with Georgetown) and row for them because it looks like you have ton of potential to be a great rower, especially if 6:30 is only your second 2k. Then you can beat all they teams that you didn't get recruited to, because honestly UDubs is the best of the best.

yeah stanford's womens team which has more pull than the mens program had 4 recruits get rejected, all of whom were national champions

i've learned so much from this process, as much as it sucked i'm glad i went through it

read that^ it seems like admissions officers are looking for that je ne sais quoi, and there is no numerical or statistical way of knowing what is going to happen.

I mean just pure percentage-wise, I should have got in to CMU, JHU, Bucknell, and Cornell before Vanderbilt, but I guess they saw something in me they liked that other colleges didn't see or didn't need for their "perfect class."

there is no way to properly understand how the admissions process works. at smaller schools it's often based on grades, test scores, and essays, but ivys get 30,000 applicants, at least half of which are qualified to attend that school, so they need intense ways of narrowing that down to ~1000 kids. if they had very high cutoffs for grades and test scores and then read all the good essays, they would still have well more than 5000 eligible candidates. so they start weeding kids out based on race, life experience, work experience, legacy, donations, etc. anything you can think of that can be used as a hook is used.

i go to an elite new england prep school designed to send kids to colleges. i'd say half of my senior class of 160 students is qualified to attend an ivy, yet we send about 3-5 kids a year to each ivy. some of the kids who got into ivys have 85 averages and weren't sports recruits while some kids with 94 averages and tons of interesting life experience were rejected. why is that? nobody knows. some cases it's clear, like race or family connections, other cases it makes no sense. you've just got to accept that it's a subjective process where a lot more factors in than what's on your application

my advice for you is to start working on developing a hook. get good grades, do interesting stuff, get good test scores, write good essays, but the key is having some kind of hook that makes you more valuable than another kid with identical or even slightly better credentials. it doesn't sound fair but none of the college admission process is fair. it's a game and it's all about how well you milk the system and play the game. truth is, most colleges are very very good, and the name of your school only matters to employers you'd rather not work with anyway. if someone's gonna hire based on the name of a university, it's not somebody who cares enough about the qualities of the applicant.

also donating buildings doesn't always do it...a kid from my school didn't get into princeton and the pool is named after him

For all the Juniors on here, this is the absolute truth. Think about why your different and unique, and try to show it as much as possible in your resume, interviews and essays. If you have a top choice, SHOW INTREST IN IT. Visit it, stay overnight, sit in on classes, email thank you letters to your tour guide, student hosts, admissions officer, and the dean of admissions. Every little thing counts.

That bit about most colleges being good really made me feel better.  I got into all the schools I applied, minus Dartmouth and Brown,  I didn't expect to get into those, but my family is from a low income bracket and despite generous offers from most of the schools, we can really only afford my last choice, and I have been in a slump about it all week.  I mean I work hard, really hard, and it just feels like shit to have all the that hard work thrown back in my face because of situation I have no control over. So it feels nice to know that it won't hinder me as long as I keep working my ass off.

You don't need to worry about that, thankfully.  Colleges evaluate your HS careers based on how you take advantage of the opportunities you have.  So if there are only 5 APs offered, and you take 4 of them, you did pretty damn good.  If every subject has two APs available, well, you'll be doing a lot more work.  A bunch of the better schools in the North East are dropping APs because they realize that having more of them doesn't help anyone.


Also, to the person asking about stats...I applied two years ago, so hopefully this is still relevant.  2290 SAT, 3.8 GPA unweighted, decent community service (~90 hrs/yr), solid extra-curriculars (all sorts of skiing, some bs clubs in HS), and a risky essay defending Oliver North as a patriot.  Got in ED to Dartmouth, was deferred EA from MIT, no clue what would have happened with the others.

It's a crap shoot.  This year Harvard took 6.07%; only two Ivys took more than 10% (Penn, Cornell).  It would all work a lot better if we applied only to a handful of schools each, but such is the nature of our competitive system.  I know that in the UK, you can only apply to either Cambridge or Oxford, not both, and you're capped at 5 schools.  Maybe that's better, but I guess it's also irrelevant.

Do apply where you're interested, do follow up and demonstrate interest, and definitely do differentiate yourself from the pack.  But also do be prepared for any number of things to happen.  My best friend was more qualified than I was, also applied ED to Dartmouth (as well as to other fine schools), and ended up only getting into his safety.  He is also in love with McGill, and couldn't be happier. 

So this whole process matters - a lot - but don't get too wrapped up in the specifics.  Such high stress for so long a time will take its toll on you, and when you crack you'll do a lot of damage.

I live forty minutes from keene and it seems like a sick school. keene itself is a great place because theres a ton of shit to do plus Granite Gorge is five minutes away. I dont wanna go there cuz its so close

question for kids from other new england private schools, do you guys have any idea how your school's gpas are seen by colleges? i know that the average gpa to get into harvard (in the last 5 or so years) from my school was 3.6. is this the same way at any other schools?

they do really weird shit with gpa's to generate a number to send to schools, but my school doesn't publish gpa's for us, it's all done by average

they had us leave the gpa box of the common app blank and instead have the school look at our attached transcript

but all the kids from deerfield who get into harvard without sports have at least a 95 average, some 97 98 range which at a school like deerfield is nearly impossible. we send a couple athletes each year who have like 84 averages and zero extracurriculars
