I was on campus last week and saw a post for a graphic arts contest to design a new sticker for Liberty Skis. I sent in an email to the school guy and got this response.
Oh shit. Let me post again when I have it ready.

Here's the note back:
-----------------
Dear Lucy,
Thanks for the note. We are handling this contest for Liberty Skis. We only posted this sticker project at three or four art and design schools - mostly California and New York, but yes, it is open to anyone. Your dean (as well as a few others), were looking for a quick post-graduation project to build students' portfolios.
As you requested, a summary of the rules is:
1) All submissions become the property of Liberty Skis Corporation
2) Three winners will be selected with three honorable mentions.
3) Cash prizes of $150, $75, and $50 for the top three designs.
4) All of top three (and possibly honorable mentions) will be made into stickers.
5) Winners will receive 100 copies of his or her winning sticker.
6) All designs must include the words 'Liberty' or 'Liberty Skis' and must have the URL 'libertyskis.com' somewhere on the sticker.
7) Target demographic is jibbers from 14 - 29 yrs of age.
8) If you want school credit the deadline is, well, it's passed already - if you don't care about school credit the deadline is June 15, 2004.
9) Design must be Adobe Illustrator or compatible
10) Submissions should be sent to: stickercontest@libertyskis.com
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. You can email the Liberty Skis guys directly if you need any more information. I told you all that I know!

So my question is, who is Liberty Skis, and what is the company like? Do any of you ride them? I'm gonna win that cash, but I need to know the right vibe.

Hey, what art school do you go to?
Liberty is a pretty cool company. I ride on their skis as well as others. They are getting better and have a big following among younger jibbers. Here's a tip honey, $150 is not a lot of dough for the work you'll put in to a sticker.
On the other hand, I guess it's cool that they're asking.

I always find requests like this ridiculously funny. Basically what Liberty is saying is that they don't want to actually hire a graphic designer for themselves, so they're just going to rip off other people's art with the lure of a quick hundred bucks or so. A serious company would hire someone to produce their art, and pay them what they should be paid.
Q: How many NS.com members does it take to answer a simple question?
A: 10. One to answer, three to say 'How fucking stupid are you?', three to say 'This has already been asked a thousand times', and three to say 'Who the fuck cares anyway?'

this is the exact same way nike came up with their logo. i say whatever works, it's not like they're duping you into letting your artwork become their property, it's clearly stated in the rules. plus you get more ideas this way instead of having one guy doing your graphic design

They could use a kick-ass design. I agree that $150 is cheap, but pretty good for an art student. Also, you may know that many graphic artists ALREADY have some dope graphix already drawn up - dropping in a LIBERTY text for $150 and a portfolio item. Not so bad, not so bad.

yeah, why not enter the contest. I may as well. I ski on Libertys. Love 'em. Really sick. Next season, they're introducing some new fat twins and some amazing new jib twins.
