are you looking for something snow oriented like sorrels? or something else if you can give us more specifics as to where you're going to be using them, what season and for what it may help.

the real question is how much are you willing to spend? also, it goes along the line of ski boots as well. if the boot doesnt fit you right, then its not going to be good for anything.

To answer the last two questions. I wouldn't turn down free boots haha. I'll put a lot of money into good product.

i am currently hiking in a pair of merrels. i have had them for almost 3 years now, and they have taken me over the gros ventre mountains, the high peaks, and currently the 48. the toes seams are falling apart, they were only water proof for about a year, and they have no grip. still, one of my favorite boots for the buck, and they fit me better than any other boot i have worn in the past. i would recomend them for hiking. ive worked in them, i dont like it.

I've owned some Merells for the past three years and I love them. I've probably backpacked over 250 miles in them along the AT and also out west. That is in addition to the countless miles put on camping, working outside and such.
Like all boots, you need to take care of them, so make sure to air them out and waterproof them. The Gore-Tex won't last forever, so invest in some cream to rub into the leather to waterproof them.
As for other brands, I've heard great things about A-Solo

You should go to a local shop for hiking boots. Get them to fit you and everything. If you have some time to break them in, you are gonna love hard leather boots, but they take a while. Ive liked REI boots in the past, and I forget what I have now, but I got them at EMS. Good boots will last you for years.
