Michigan Tech skiing opportunities

So here's another "I'm possibly coming to school here from out of state and how is the skiing scene" thread.

I know that there is a lot more natural terrain and good off-groomer skiing to be done compared to the Twin Cities where i live now and have skied all of my life, but I'm also concerned with how the park is at Mont Ripley right on Campus and at surrounding areas of which i nothing about.  I would be more into a nice jump line and/or a couple sizable tables rather than a bunch of rails and jibs but i enjoy park skiing in general either way.  Any tips, pointes, helpful facts, or opinions as to where i may spend the next 4 years of my life skiing?

I hear bohemia is often called the best "Back country" skiing in the midwest.

Ripley's park is ok, nothing spectacular. It's getting better though. It's also nice that a season pass is included with tuition. We also just started up a freestyle ski and snowboard club through the school, which gives us funding. This also gives us a lot of input on how stuff is set up in the park. Also Bohemia is only about 45 minutes to an hour away and it's well worth the $100 season pass.

Yea, Bohemia is wayy sick. But Houghton majorly lacks community wise. Sort of a dying town. If you're interested in going to school up here, take the time to check out NMU, and spend a day hanging out around MArquette. I've spent time at Universities all over the US, and NMU is by far my favorite community.

funny you mention Michigan tech, i know a buddy of mine went there and they have a design + engineer type program where they build ski boxes and rails.

Yeah its called BST. They are starting to build skis this year and have been making their own snowboards for a while. Here's the link to their site

i've thought about marquette too but i talked to a NMU rep at the college fair here recently and he encouraged me to go to Tech instead because he said the engineering program isn't really comparable at NMU

^^Yeah if your looking for an engineering school in the U.P. Tech is the best option for you. It's pretty sweet because you start right into classes pertaining to your major and anything that you do have to do that isn't related to your major is usually really easy and doesn't take up a lot of time. Such as the freestyle skiing class that we have at ripley or you can take a class to become a certified ski instructor and then get a job at ripley.

MTU does have a better engineering program. But, I have a friend who just graduated Northern with a mechanical engineering degree. His sister had the same degree at tech.. He tried taking her tests and said they were the exact same thing.. Just an observation..
