interesting! i didn't know he actually left rhcp. but i can see why. the music styles differ greatly, and he probably has a lot more creativity working with tmv. there's obviously no denying he was a concrete part of rhcp, but i guess his out put was limited? i don't think it's really an issue to compare the bands. they both have a lot of high points.
I feel that way because John was the only good part of RHCP. Maybe he was more fitting back in the 90's when they were in the funk-era, but now that his style is more refined and progressive, it parallels The Mars Volta much more.
i meant that he is the one that made that song possible, Kiedis didn't even want to record it because he didn't think there would be a guitar part for it
In 2006 I was privileged enough to tour with TMV and RHCP on the US tour. It was widely known at the time that TMV was chosen as the opener because John was a huge fan of TMV and Omar's playing style. RHCP would often have Omar and other members come onstage to play during their set.
Omar and John had a friendship that from an outsiders point of view was John admiring what Omar could accomplish with his guitar.
I will not form any wild opinions as to why he left RHCP. All I can say is that those two would often jam together like children first discovering music.
That tour was the best tour I have had the privilege to work on and this thread brought back memories of some good times in my life.
I know this is a huge claim and people will say pics or it didn't happen. Here I am guinea pigging a fly rig for Flea for a Halloween show, Flea testing it after me, the TMV set up you can see Omar's rig to the left Orange cabinets beautiful rig, John's pedals pre-show and the full rig pre-show.
lets hope this works. I am an audio engineer/production guy not a computer guy.
I fail at posting pics, I have tried with/without the gui editor, with the tags and I still seem to be breaking the inter-web. If someone could fix this for me I would be very thankful.
Frusciante's new album "PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone" is fucking awesome. Everyone should go listen to it immediately, the entire thing can be found on youtube. However, I highly suggest trying to listen to the vinyl.
I was trying to listen to this album off my iTunes last night, couldn't find it... Guess I'll need to go DL it again.
On a somewhat unrelated/related note I'm stoked to listen to Frusciante's new solo album tomorrow. New Mars Volta earlier this year was killer, really curious to see what kind of a direction he goes in this time. The Empyrean was a solid album but not really what I was expecting from Frusciante... I want a little more Volta-esque dark/eerie feel, hopefully it delivers.
