What to Wear under a Ski Jacket?

I kind of struggled with the temperature last year. I never really knew what to wear under my ski jacket. I live in Northeastern PA and the average temperature while I ski is around 30-20F. I always wore a core coat but i was too bulky and I was wonder if anyone had inexpensive solutions.

I was gonna just wear under armor with two or three tall tees but it really doesn't sound warm.

I like to wear crew neck sweaters under my jacket cuz it's a warm layer and you don't have to deal with another hood

A nice big wool sweater.
No, but seriously I just wear like a layer of neoprene then a thick polar fleece sweater and a tee. Plus my jacket which has a small amount insulation, and a pair of down gloves and I was toasty at -22F.

Usually just a t-shirt, but if it's colder than usual I'll throw on a North Face fleece.

Get some HH thermals, I have the warm ones and they keep me toasty even when its -30 out. I think the dry ones are better for warmer conditions though as I have overheated a fair few times when its warmed up significantly.

Costs some money but they are really good quality although they are only 40% merino compared to the icebreaker stuff.

Otherwise 10 XXXXXXL tees

if that isn't your style, just get a baselayer top, salomon, under armour and a lot of other companies sell them.

It all depends. Is your jacket insulated or is it just a shell?

Here's a few good layering techniques.

For a base layer, I recommend a material that's whicking like Underarmor or something polyester. You don't want cotton for a base layer because it absorbs moisture and will only make you colder where as synthetics disperse it.

Next, you need an insulation layer. This all depends on how cold it is outside. My jacket is lightly insulated, so I'm usually fine with just a few cotton tall-T's underneath if it's 30 outside. On colder days like 15-20 I'll layer up with a hoodie on top of T's (my hood is removeable) or a fleece if it starts to get really cold.

I normally wear a long sleeve thermal, then a t shirt, then a polo (keeps your neck real warm without needing a snood) and then if its really really cold a fleece or hoodie. On top of all that i wear my jacket. All the layers are fairly thin so i still have loads of manoeuvrability.

Fact of that matter is if you go to some cheapo sports shop and buy some under-layers branded or unbranded and have that, a t shirt and a fleece you will be warm.

but seriously;

go to an outdoor store and ask for technical bottom and middle layers, they'll help you out....

i usally wear long sleeved t-shirt+backprotector +flannel shirt+outer layer on upper part of my body and bottompart; merino wool long pants, kneeprotectors and crashpants, then my skipants....

sometimes when it's really cold i put on a thin downjacket underneath everything....

(not saying my setup is technical at all, but it gets things done for everything i do on the mountain...)

colder days hoody


really really really cold days hoody, north face fleece


then jacket.

Under armor with a long sleeve tee. When it gets a little colder, I throw on a fleece over top. Warm days, under armor w/a short sleeve tee / tall tee.

I'm from Alaska... and 30-20 F weather is a shell and tee shirt weather... but I guess just get a light fleece or something. But I mean if you're actually skiing and not sitting around you shouldn't need many layers. That's just the way I look at it.

cold days - long sleeve under armour, tshirt, fleece zipped into jacket shell

regular days - long sleeve under armour, 2 tshirts, shell (maybe throw on my hoody vest)

warm days - tshirt, shell (or just a tshirt, or tshirt with vest)
