I was fairly sure that "il a été" meant "was" so "il a été magnifique" should mean he was magnifique...
Correct me if I am horribly wrong.

passe compose is for short term things, imparfait is for more general things. if in general he was magnifique you want il etait.

ahh the more i think about it, the more i think i may have initially been wrong. i assumed you don't use avoir and etre like that, but it seems to be possible.

you guys are both right, you can say il était (he was) or il a été (kinda like he had been, but in the end in this case it means he was). it all depends on what tense you were using throughout the rest of the text and shit
