The mountain is supposedly very sick.  I would not worry too much about park features, you can do that anywhere.  Enjoy the mountain for what it is.

You can't go through gates without an avalanche beacon shovel and probe. High Avy risk in Montana and if you can ski every run at Big Sky you would be better then some pros. Lots of in bounds cliffs and you will shit yourself in some places.

I got through the gates just fine every time last year. For some reason they never checked?? But it is definitely a good idea to have all the shit. Especially in the A-Z's.

i dont know how you can just say "high avvy risk in montana", it depends entirely on snow conditions when you are there. montana is not any more or less susceptible to avalanches than anywhere else you could ski.


that being said, upper AZ's, Big Culoir, North Summit etc you need a beacon, shovel, probe and a partner for even though they are "inbounds". Theres definitely some steep, big, gnarly terrain here that you shouldnt just jump into unknowingly.

Park is alright, but who comes to montana to ski park? Go shred all the other unbelievable terrain.

Yes it is. Montana gets thin snowpack and very cold temperatures almost every early season, leading to less stable base layers. Compared to somewhere with milder and wetter weather, like Washington or Tahoe, the avalanche danger in MT is huge.

Moonlight Basin has a super long, fun park. As for backcountry the Tram is all you need.

he said avvy danger is high in montana. avvy danger can be high or low here, just like anywhere. it depends on the snow.


beacons are required in some terrain. this has nothing to do with high or low avvy danger, this has to do with the resort mitigating their risks. there are places here you shouldnt just drop into without knowing what you are doing. thats not just because of avvy danger, its also getting cliffed out, etc.


if you are going to criticize what i said, do so directly, not by giving some pseudo-intellectual answer that really says almost nothing.

Ok, here's a more direct criticism. Of-fuckin-course there is a MUCH higher avvy danger in Montana than many other US mountains, i am willing to bet that this is a fact, althought i can't be arsed to go find figures. I am quite sure that if the op is from a tiny midwest hill, or some of the smaller ice coast hills, he will most likely NEVER have encountered an avalanche there. Seeing that Montana is much steeper and snowier, less wooded, it is most certainly more likely to have relatively high avalanche danger at any given tim,e than many, many other hills/resorts. Your reply is aimed at someone that gives the very generalised view that avalanche danger is always high in Montana. You then give the, if possible, even more generalised view that Montana is equally prone to avalanche danger as any other resort in the world. That is a major fail.

Please also explain to me why you thought my first reply was "pseudo-intellectual"?
Do you even know what that means?

obviously avvy danger here is not the same as in the midwest. i would hope that the OP could figure that out, though perhaps that was too big an assumptions since clearly you cant differentiate between the two. i think its pretty obvious i meant between here and other real mountains, not dirt hills in the midwest. after all, i moved here from chicago, and even though im from the midwest i can understand the difference.

Lol high avy danger. When? its fuckin october. you cannot asses snowpack unless its there in real time. LOL shallow and cold snow pack is only one factor of a about million that can happen at any given time in any given spot in MT. So for some one to asses the avalanche danger in MT as high compared to other states is just strait retarded. Especially in October. I swear half of this site has downs or something.

They only way you can argue is by taking the debate way out of context? Of course where not comparing the potential of avalanches From MT to some shit hill in the midwest. Where comparing it as a whole to other states in the region with similar Mountains and similar weather. I would think that you would be smart enough to know this.

Ben explicitly said that Montana has no more avvy danger than ANYWHERE else you can ski. That is an outrageous claim, end of story. You should have read the thread before posting. Are you saying that Montana is unlikely to have relatively high avalanche danger?

Coverage SHOULD be pretty good by then. Pow depends entirely on the year. Last year was bone dry, the year before was pretty good. But all forecasts are pointing to a snowy winter so lookin good.

Snake pit on the eastern exposure is one of my fav trails. Narrow, steeps, and some glades. above the treeline is the best imo though. Big Couloir is 1 of the craziest trails i've ever seen from the tram. You have to ski down in 2's, sign papers, and you need avalanche gear i believe. Basicly it's a wide chute that winds its way down through the rocky steeps. gl on your trip man. It's my favorite mtn
