IMac or Macbook pro?

Getting a new computer within the next couple weeks. Can't decide on the 15 inch i7 macbook pro using external memory as well, or the 27' iMac with the i5 processor. I have a laptop right now that i would like to sell if i were to get the macbook. so basically will the macbook pro preform as well as an imac for video editing? and if not how much better is the iMac? the specs look fairly similar to me besides the harddrive. I would like a laptop for bringing to school and traveling but if the imac is much better i may go that way.

yeah we use them in my film class they are great. do you have any experience with a macbook pro you could compare to it?

The i5 is a newer processor, but its more of a change to the i7 than a redesign aimed at creating a more cost effective and mainstream consumer processor. The i7 is still better at doing multiple tasks at once, as it has hyperthreading and triple channeled memory.

Regardless, either will be more than adequate for doing basic web edits.

If you don't need the mobility of a laptop, then FOR SURE get the iMac over the MBP. You get a bigger harddrive, a quad core processor (over dual core in the MBP), and a much bigger, more hi-rez display, for pretty much the same price. I just got my i7 2.93ghz 27" iMac a couple of weeks ago, and it's awesome from what I've seen so far, only complaint is that I can hear the harddrive clicking (normal noises) sometimes.

If you plan on traveling with your computer at all, go with the Macbook Pro. I purchased my 15" Macbook Pro with the i7 processor and 8Gb of RAM early May and absolutely love it. Having all of my pictures and music with me is worth the extra cost to me.

I have the i7 MBP 15" with 4GB ram, and it's good stuff. I don't know about video editing, but it runs photoshop like a champ and I play Left 4 Dead 2 at native resolution with no lag or anything. Battery stays alive forever, too

i have an mbp, i love it. it's still really powerful, and i do quite a bit of processor intensive stuff; i've never had any problems.

it really comes down to whether you'll ever need it to be mobile. the mbp is really useful if you go on trips and need to dump footage/edit on the go, but if you're going to be staying in one spot then obviously the imac is the way to go. both will be solid for video editing.

if you go with the mbp, be prepared to drop a lot on external hard drives for both storing as well as backing up.

yea but if you do a ton of work and have a lot of footage, that disappears fast. i've got my comp's 500 gb drive, a 2 tb drive, a 500 gb drive, and a 250 gb drive filled up with footage im working with

I'd go with the Mbp (Macbook pro) any day. They're awesome. Harddrive shouldn't be an issue, as you can buy like a 1tb harddrive for what...Like a 100 bucks? Apart from that, you barely need any more graphical stuff, seeing as it's an amazingly fast computer.

I'd go with the mbp for...besides....27"...you don't need it...it just looks cool but 15" is more than enough imo. I'm typing on a 13" mbp and I find it big enough.

This isn't about typing. More screen space is great for video editing. I'm on a 21.5" iMac and 27" would be nice but i chose a faster CPU over a bigger screen (couldn't afford both).

Do you travel? Have you edited on a laptop? I personally prefer a desktop for editing.

I have edited mostly on imacs at my school. It is what they have for their film program. I would very much like the macbook pro for the mobility though. I realize the larger screen size would be ideal but i could always get a big monitor or hook it to my hd tv when im at home. My real question was is there any huge differences in performance but from the sounds of it there are not. So I am thinking i will go with the macbook. Still have a week or two to decide.

exactly what i was thinking.... i got one cuz i used one in video at my school and it was the best decision... runs twice as quick as my dell on the same internet conection
