No Soda for people on Welfare

So apparently the mayor of New York is trying to get all lemonades and sodas to be put on a no-buy list with Welfare coupons (I didn't know these were still used).

This sounds like a great idea, as if you are struggling for food, these things should not be on the menu which other people have paid for as it's pretty clear they are unhealthy and should be paid for with own, earned money instead.

I guess six years ago Minnesota tried to ban junk food and candies from the Welfare coupons, but the bill didn't pass, because, and I quote: "The ban would have put the users of the coupons in a very awkward position." I'm laughing my ass off here, what does that even mean?

Could you elaborate on these other problems, I'd like to hear.

I don't really like the banning from people who make their own money and decide if they want to harm their bodies in some ways (I know I do) but I really do think that putting limitations on people who, inadvertently or not, live off other people is justified in cases like this.

imagine, you are already embarrassed to use your food stamps (yes its a cruel world, people look, point, and talk behind your back), you have a cart full of items and check out. All said items are now scanned, bagged, and back in your cart. You go to pay with your stamps, and not till then do you know that half the items can't be paid for and need to be taken out, unbagged, and returned. There would also no doubt be confusion as to what items qualify for the stamps, and people on welfare would probably feel awkward asking one of the stock-boys about a certain item, only to hear the kid say idk and give a judging look.

Obviously all hypothetical, but i doubt the welfare system would be able to coordinate the proper education for an even more complicated system than they already created. What they should do is have a few pre-made welfare food packages that people can choose from.

I think it's less about the health and more about necessity. If they are on welfare they supposedly need money to live. they need food for their family not soda and candy. Drink water and buy cheap food.

Ah, okay. I thought it would be about fast food joints and then candy is usually obvious. I think that this could work without the embarrasment if the states in question would update a list of items that are not able to be purchased with these stamps. That of course takes resources and would demand an Internet connection from these worse-off people... GAH!

It can seem very complicated, but maybe this awkwardness would only impose them to really try and make something out of themselves, and by this I don't mean that everyone on welfare is deserving of their situation. I just hope these kind of changes affect the lives of people who abuse welfare.

what about cigs, and beer too? they are getting paid about minimum wage, sometimes MORE a month depending on if thet have 7+ kids hahahah its bull shit, all they do is sit on their porch in a lawn chair in drink their natty ice while gettin paid, with health insurance, food, clothes, and spending money! something seems wrong here...hmmm not sure what tho

this- besides soda the real problem is that shitty food for you(junk food, processed food) is cheap- so those on welfare or even the poor have an extremely high rate of obesity and the diseases related to them- thus causing their medicaid cost to increase- so by removing the shittier foods the government is actually saving money two ways, no more expensive sodas, and potentially an increase in the health of the impoverished

I am for welfare if you need it btw- its unfortunate that some scumbags rape the system and give it a bad name

really? that's what politicians are spending their time on, banning welfare recipients from drinking soda and lemonade? are you kidding me? soda and lemonade are normal fucking drinks, i can see not allowing buying booze or tobacco but now you cant buy a drink with 10 mg more sugar than the OJ you drink at breakfast?

and ive said it before, and ill say it again, you guys are 1) painfully naive if you think everyone on welfare is loving it and has made no effort to get off of it, and 2) big gigantic pussies if youre soo bent out of shape about a small percentage of the money youve made being given so people who i guarantee have worked 5x as hard as some of you can live a modest life. i absolutely guarantee ive "lost" more money in the last few months from taxes than the vast majority of you, stop crying about cents on the dollar being pooled so people working their ass off with kids in a shitty apartment in the city can actually bring dinner home to their kids. youre a bunch of PUSSIES, and youre also myopic as fuck if you think you want poor people receiving no aid in our country. im SURE you guys would all benefit more if we just kept fucking over people in shitty places and had more american children growing up with nothing while you retards bitch on your computers and cell phones about people with next to nothing buying fucking LEMONADE while youre living in the lap of luxury. taxes are marginal, you dont start getting taxed hard until you have WAY more than enough to be living the sweet life. i bet half you idiots bitching in these kind of threads actually think that when a tax rate is x%, youre actually having x% of your earnings taken away (ive seen that insinuation made in several threads like this)

i didnt read the second half of your post anyways...

I think it sounds like a great idea, people dont drink OJ all day but people do crack open pop after pop after pop. This leads to health problems when you get fat and get diabetes. These people are already on welfare so health care is something they dont have im sure. when they have health problems we get to also pay to fix that. Might as well try and fix one part of the problem before it gets out of hand...

Wow, couldn't even finish reading this it was so terrible. I hope you realize that there are the people that deserve to be on welfare. But to say that they work harder than us? Common, that's just foolish. So many people have kids so that they can be put on welfare, and you think they're trying to get a job? Fuck no, why would they do that when they get a fat check in the mail every month and spend the majority of it on drugs and alcohol. I think it's plain stupid that we don't drug test people on welfare, instead we punish people who do go out, who do get jobs, and who do work their asses off daily getting up at 5am and working a 8 hour job daily. The more money you make the more you get fucked. Where's the motivation to do good in America when you could just sit back, do drugs, and never do anything productive for society. I expect a response to this RUBBERSOUL

Way to generalize there, hot shot. There were two people in this thread who said "No for welfare" and they did it so with bad grammar or "." and everyone who clearly have brains commented on both sides of the subject - not everyone on welfare deserves to be in that position. By limiting access or creating new taxes for absolutely, fucking terrifyingly unhealthy products, these industries will suffer blows. There are two possible outcomes:

1)By losing market share these companies will have to come out with healthier options.

2)They will be hit hard and forced to shut down (highly unprobable).

Even in the case of number two and people in the industry losing their jobs and so on, change is inevitable and a company with healthier agendas will rise to take their place.

And about that tax rate, well, if I earn 100 euros, I get taxed 17% and after some other deductions I end up with about 80 euros. So I don't see your point.

People on welfare should be trying to get back on their foot, but who is going to do this when they're getting a fat check they wouldn't be getting if they were working. I don't know why you continue to support many of these people.

I feel like they shouldn't be able to drink anything but water, water's healthy for everyone and cost minimal tax money for everyone else who is working. It frustrates me that these people don't get drug tested. What's the reason for all this money disappearing if all they do is sit at their house? Drugs and Alcohol. I don't know about you, but I don't wanna work my ass off working like every other normal person in America for some fucking lazy ass sit on the couch and get high all day (and that's what's happening)

My aunt does this and it frustrates the hell out of me, so don't act like my information is bullshit, because i know for a fact this shit happens.

I wake up in the morning and go to work for at least 8 hours every day, and get taxed a lot. however i can look at my situation and realize life is easy as fucking pie for me and you and it's because of PURE FUCKING LUCK. i would love to see how well any of you shittalkers would do if you were born in the city. you guys act as if the amount of money you make in this country is a 1:1 ratio with how hard you work and how much "good" you do, but that's simply not the case

for the record, i obviously concede that there are people out there taking advantage of the welfare system. and i explicitly said that i agree you shouldnt be able to do drugs and shit while youre on it. but to think that no one out there actually needs welfare and is working hard to get off it is the kind of naivete that only stupid suburban white kids in this country who have had everything given to them can muster.

"the more money you make, the more you get fucked." you cant really think this is true can you? so you think that when the first ~9 grand you make is taxed 10%, and the next ~$25000 is taxed 15%, and the next ~$45000 is taxed 25%, youre getting fucked for working more? the marginal tax rates mean that only the section of earnings that the tax rate refers to is taxed at that amount, for the exact reason that it ensures you CANNOT BE PUNISHED FOR MAKING MORE MONEY. it's not as if, when you say your tax rate is 35%, 35% of your money is being taxed. as i said, only the money over a certain amount is taxed more, the money that is way more than you need.

the idea that people are having a fun life trying to make ends meet on welfare while you "work your ass off" to support them is absurd. what do you do for a job?

I was on food stamps for awhile, I ate like a king. Most people on food stamps abuse the system I can guarantee it, take a stroll down to the application office if you don't believe me. Live in a shitty area and watch at the checkout as people max out their food assistance card on junk food and whip out a fat roll of hundos to pay for the ciggys.

institute a 6 month max for all welfare, after that you're cut off, can't find a job you piece of shit? go ahead turn to crime, I'd rather pay for your prison cell than your freedom fritos and xbox live subscription. After a while the degenerates would be weeded out and the over all drain would be less on the hard working folks like RubberDick.

I do believe that there are people that should be on welfare for the right reasons.

I did grow up in the city of Detroit and my family struggled, my parents worked their asses off for my family when I was young. Meanwhile, the neighbors I had next door (living on welfare of course) were just useless and sat in their house with their 50" flat screen TV playing video games and bumping loud music all day. After growing up and working on my own now (I work gas line construction) I see this more and more. Honestly, from my experiences in life everyone that is on welfare is on drugs. Call me crazy, but this is first hand experiences. Honestly, I can't put a number on the welfare checks, but if it's enough money to buy flat screen TV's and provide drugs and alcohol, it's simply too much. So to answer your question, yes I truly believe that many of these people aren't working there asses off, because I know for a fact many of them sit around fucking all day and having more kids so they can get even more money from the government. They don't give a fuck about their kids, they care about the money they're gonna get.

Also whose to say that people and families working aren't struggling too? I have three siblings and my parents weren't collecting any money because they had a job and were a functioning part of America. Just because you have a job that allows you to be comfortable doesn't mean everyone working has the same luxuries as yourself.

You're just so uneducated on this I can't even argue with you anymore.

and just for the record, around 60% of tax goes to "defense," social security, and medicare etc while 14% goes to safety net programs. so if you made 50,000 last year... around 2.8%, or 1400 bucks of that went to these programs that are ruining your lives so bad.(if someone wants to check my math thatd be cool, i had to fly through it cause im at work..)


so, the question is: is the fact that SOME people take advantage of the welfare system, to which you give ~2.8% of your earnings, enough reason to stop the system so that honest hard working people in shitty situations can survive and feed their kid?

if youre so up in arms about your money being "taken away," bitch about things other than welfare, like the money pit over in the fucking desert

read the post i made and then tell me who's uneducated. you guys bitch and moan about this shit so much but the reality is you dont even know the math behind it at all. telling me youve had personal experience of people taking advantage of the system would be great if it were more than a handful of instances, and i had claimed no one takes advantage of the system. i have said again and again obviously people do (so you can stop with your all-powerful personal experiences, of which there are probably less than 10) and realize that you have not seen nearly enough to realize that people all over the country are working their asses off harder than you ever will.

so go to my other post: is that ~3% of money you give to this program really a big deal? do you think the country would be better off if we stopped giving these tiny amounts of money and just let people starve?

and i agree with the second part to an extent, there does need to be something to encourage getting off of welfare if possible, you shouldnt be able to just leech it but im not saying the system is perfect or even close to it. im simply saying when you guys bitch and moan about it so much (and then admit they used to do the exact thing theyre bitching about!) and say it should be abolished... you dont have the experience or authority to say that
