Freehand mounting

Freehand mounting:

So I got a pair of skis that I don't care a whole lot about. I want to mount'em but don't want to pay the shop to do it. Is it hard or worthwhile to freehand mount? I found a video on vimeo. Anyone have suggestions or tips? Thanks.

When you pre drill make sure you tape the drill bit to what depth you want the hole to be to make sure you don't drill to deep, other then that just pay a shop to mount them. It's better to pay the price then to PAY the price.......................

There are some really good threads in here, however, thanks to the great search bar I can't find them for you. Here is something that might help you though, depending on what bindings you have.

http://www.quiverkiller.com/ -> Installation -> Downloads

Then scroll down and see if they have a paper template for your bindings.

You still need to measure a lot with a paper template, but it sure does help.

Most shops are around that range.  My local shop charges $90 for them to mount a ski that you didn't buy from them.  I hate that shop.

if you use a whiteboard marker you can draw everywhere, i always mount my own bindings. aka poor

i do it with all my skis now. its not very tough. just make sure you mark on the ski where the holes are for your binding (and make sure there right). dont forget to fill your old holes.

I usually use a paper jig, and make sure you measure a TON and mark everything and make sure you don't drill too deep. Also, be careful with power tools, they can harm you (I have to say that). Just take your time, it's really not that hard, but you can screw up, and a lot of the times, screw ups mean you can no longer use those skis.

make sure you also make them the same distance on each ski, i almost mounted mine at a different places then the other ski, Measure seven times, cut once haha

Yeah my local one charges $75 to mount if you didn't buy from them. Its a fuckin ripoff. I'm tempted to just mount the bindings myself

Paper temples are good.

Measure 3 times, drill ones. Digital calipers make it SO much easier. There are lots of threads/How to's on TGR about mounting, go search over there. Way better info on stuff like that there than here.

Some tips:
-Make sure you don't over torque the screws, as it strips them, and you've got a whole different issue.
-Use a drill collar set to 9mm so you don't drill too deep.
-3.9mm drill bit for skis with no metal, 4.1mm for skis with metal.
-Screw in by hand, not drill.
-Make sure your center line on your ski is perfectly straight as the template bases everything off this line.

all very true except use a 3.5mm drill bit for skis with no metal. When in doubt, just take it to a shop

This is ridiculous. I think we charge $35 if you didn't purchase from our company... Im sorry you guys go through this crap, I'd feel terrible to have to charge that.

Nah it was older, back in the spring/ late winter. But I'm glad you got some templates in there.

And to everyone bitching about high costs to mount, I'm right there with you. I was at school last year and my mom brought my lizzies over to the local shop to get mounted, I didn't buy the skis or bindings there. She brings them up to school, and was like "It was $80 to mount them, so I will just take it out of your bank account." I flipped shit on her. Called up Skirack in Burlington, $40 to mount them if nothing was bought there. I was fucking pissed off.

Shops charge when you didn't buy the ski from them because they need to pay for something called INSURANCE!

if a shop is charging $75-$90 to mount a pair of skis there's a very good chance that they have been sued in the past and their insurance rates are through the roof.

but also, if you didn't buy the skis/bindings from them, why do you act like they owe you something? in reality they can charge what they want. free/inexpensive mounts are just another benefit of supporting your local shop. if you save money by buying online, be prepared to pay down the road for mounts, warranty claims, etc...

I usually just use wood glue, you put it in the holes after drilling but before putting the bindings in place, it basically acts as a water barrier so that water doesn't get in and rot the core where the holes are drilled causing a pull out. It's mostly shop preference but most shops I've been to use wood glue cause it's easier.

Still though, no one wants to pay $80 for a shop to sit around and not mount them for 3 weeks only to fuck them up when they finally get around to it becasue "they are so busy." That's what seems to happen most of the time.

This is true for the most part.  I can't object to what you're saying, but $75-$90 is pretty steep.  I think most should be like $50-$60.

A shop i got my disorderly's at charges $100 dollars if you didn't get the skis from them. Luckily I did so it was free.

Definitely not P-Tex. The best way is to use some plastic plugs with a bit of wood glue. My ski shop usually gives me them when i need em. Otherwise to gnar sell them.

Next best is golf tees. just saw the end off and use that.
