Was wondering if this would come out in the forums before we got a chance to post it. ;)

First off - this is totally awesome news.

Nothing is going to change about Newschoolers. Over the years we have grown into a massive force in this industry, and proven that we are a successful and stable business.

Even the most ou of touch greedy business executive can't disagree with the fact that Newschoolers is an incredible business.

So even if there was corporate douchebags at this company, they wouldn't mess with what we've built.

Good news is that we already know everyone over there, and they have a truly awesome team, from the employees of powder all the way up to the senior executives.

Personally I think that this is going to be an awesome relationship. I've always really respected powder as a magazine, and thought that they do an incredible job at putting out a high quality book. I'm excited to be able to tap into that knowledge, and learn from them as peers. Remember that powder has been in this industry for almost 40 years!

Well also be able to tap into things they do... Ski tests, mountain information, varied content, etc. It's exciting that they are a publication from the complete other side of the ski industry than Newschoolers.

Newschoolers is an ultra-focused and super core media outlet for the stuff that were into. Well always be that, and we will always stay true to our roots. Something like this allows us to be aligned with something that also represents the other side of skiing, pow, big mountain, etc. So as an overall media company, NS and Powder offer a really complete package without either having to sacrifice anything about what made them what they are.

So all in all, I think this is some of the most exciting news ever to happen in skiing. This partnership gives people such an awesome one-stop shop for every aspect of skiing. Don't like park? Buy powder... You're still supporting Newschoolers.

So all in all, I'm really excited about this next phase in our journey. Can't wait to work with Derek, Ashley, Rogge and everyone else over there.

Next step... World domination.

I completely agree. then it starts to become a Bell Globemedia sorta deal and soon enough all your news is coming from the same source. It's quite sad really to see stuff like this happening. And it leaves no room for new media outlets to start up. 

Massive conglomerate corporations are really what's killing quality media on all levels. You need healthy competition, and if two main sources of news in the skiing world are now combined, I don't see it being too long before more media agencies such as Freeskier are bought out too.

Well, seeing as NS was already a part of a larger corporation, it doesn't matter much. Though it will make NS biased towards Powder/ Freeskier.

I would hate for it to end up where one corporation ends up having a monopoly on action sports media.

Especially as the ski media industry is so small right now, it can easily get swallowed up by one dominant player.

Everybody is giving this conglomeration, if it's even fair to say that, a bad spin. Sure, if you had a bunch of greedy business owners running all the media outlets that converged into one, the quality might go down. But did anybody ever stop and think? The ski industry media leaders probably aren't out to form an evil giant single media outlet with one sided news stories and a general dislike of skiing.

And notice I use probably. Although I'd like to believe that everybody in this thing called skiing, which some call a business, is genuinely a good person I have no concrete evidence to prove either possibility. Certainly from most of the awesomeness that goes around in skiing (NS, nimbus, lots of other stuff) pushes my opinion towards the better option though.

It's the number 1 reason I'd like to become either a pro or somebody high in the industry (not gonna happen). To figure out how it works. It's like until you work at a restaurant, you don't know what goes on in the kitchen. Except on a bit or a larger scale. You could be eating grade A chicken or dog made to taste like chicken and not know, get it?

First, I can't help and laugh that The Ski Show is being talked about in this thread. Yet another reason why the members of NS are the fucking best! Side note, thank you for all your support with The Ski Show. Now that we have the tech wizardry of Grind TV and most importantly, Newschoolers.com on board in the ASG fam, I can only image how awesome the show's content will be created and delivered. I'm stoked.


Second of all, I haven't read all the posts in this thread BUT the most important thing I need to stress is that Powder DOES NOT own Newschoolers. Powder and Newschoolers essentially are now step-bros. Our parent companies got married and now we're sharing a bedroom (one parent company) Kind of like this:




I'm excited about working with Doug and Aaron, but most importantly, I'm excited to work with the guy that has been 100% instrumental in my career as a writer and a party hound and yes, I'm talking about Jeff Schmuck. Back in the day (which is almost 4-5 years ago) Schmuck and I had the best time creating content for NS and while NS.com and Powder.com are our respective domains and the content will remain the same, it'll be fun as hell to write for NS again.

For lack of a better action sports word, I'm stoked. This is going to be so much fun for all us and we (skiers) are all going to benefit from it.

My primary focus will be Powder. Schmuck's primary focus will continue to be Newschoolers. And you can bet your ass that we'll still be competing for exclusive interviews, event coverage, and product information BUT don't be surprised if you see Mr. Schmuck's byline in Powder (hint: it's in our current November issue!) and maybe he'll be kind enough to let me write a thing or two for NS.


As for The Ski Show, let's just say it's on ice (puns are fun!) but it'll be back.

Folks, what drives NS? The COMMUNITY!

NS has been and always been one of the tightest online communities for actions sports community on the internet. Guess what, that's not changing!

I don't understand how anyone can look at this negatively and say combining two amazing, creative and unique teams, won't create amazing results. We live as skiers in one of the fastest developing industry in actions sports, and part of that can be accredited in thanks to the industries ability to share ideas. SHARING being the key word. Sharing promotes thought and encourages conversation and more debate, and I think we can all be proud because NS has created a very impressive environment to do just that.

Powder and Newschoolers have created not just amazing places to get content, but to voice you're opinion (hell I could probably claim I was raised by the NS principles of childhood more so than my parents), and have created a legacy doing so in the online world. The hard work of the respective parties is a formula no one would think to change.

Changes happen, the leaves change colour. But at the end of the day, we get to keep do the same damn thing. Staying fucking passionate about our sport!

What if PB, Level 1, Matchstick, Stept etc were all the same company?? The ski movies would be shit compared to what they are.  They are all very legit, amazing, creative, and unique companies so you'd think the results would be amazing right? But no, all the friendly competition to have the best movie of the year and all other aspects that makes IF3 and other such events exist would be gone and there would be a serious lack of effort to be the best and the movies just would not be nearly as good.

So let's say Armada, 4FRNT, Moment, Line, and shit load of legit companies all got bought out by Nike.  Nike, like Source Interlink, has its fingers in all sorts of sports and doesn't have any specific forté.  Would you say that would benefit this sport? We're all still going to be enjoying it just as much as before, but we won't have the backing of local smaller companies. 

All the ski companies then get to share their idea right? Would that really be good? What drives the next wave of skis and technology id competition from various smaller companies and it forces more ingenuity, such as Line coming out with the Afterbang to compete with other park skis as it incorporates a completely new technology.


Amalgamating all aspects of a certain sport can never help.  What if T&L bought out all the local ski shops?

Correct me if I'm wrong. I was somewhat of a new member to the forums. But NS has been bought before right? I remember something about them being bought. Giving NS funding. Before it was actually partially funded by donator's (me /claim).
So, like I saw posted on the news page comments, someone said NS sold out. Nope. It's just moving up in the sports community. More support, more exposure, more bonus.

Congrats. I think it's for the best of the website.
