Yes, there was a Cognitive Anthropology piece I read, just for fun a while back, which dealt with this sort of thing.

It is basically to do with subconscious association of names with people.

So, in your past, you'll have met people with many different names. Some people you'll have loved, others you will have not liked. Of the people you have liked, you tend to associate their name with good things, and vice versa.

For example, if you have an aunt called Carol, who is grumpy, boring, etc, you'll associate that name with those traits. If you have a friend called Simon who is really fun and happy, you'll initially assume those traits in any other person with that name.

It comes from a part of the the brain that deals with split-second decisions, and is a throw-back to the less-developed brains of our ancestors. In the past (hundreds of thousands to millions of years, we're talking), we were not intelligent enough to assess and understand every situation, so we made decisions based on association. So the process in the brain is like this, for example: red fungi are poisonous => we associate the colour red with pain => avoid red things. And so on. Nowadays, it is as such: 'Kyle' dumps you => subconsciously associate the name 'Kyle' with heartbreak => less receptive to guys called Kyle. And vice versa.

In the modern brain, we associate certain names with positivity, and others with negativity. So if you've known lots of fun, happy girls called Rebecca, you'll be more receptive to another called Rebecca. If you've had your heart broken by a guy called Kyle, you'll be wary, by association, of other guys called Kyle.
