Nirvana or Hendrix?

I like hendrix but I'd have to go with nirvana. Hendrix is a way over rated guitarist. Nirvana has a lot of skill in the subtle areas or their guitar work.

Yeah, you can learn a watered down version but to really get the passion coming out of it and rhythm right isn't easy. Not the hardest nirvana song anyway

I doubt anyone who has to learn it in 2 hours is capable of "passion" on the guitar.

I meant to type Us and Them... while screwing around in iTunes I accidentally compiled them into one song long long ago and only learned to undo it recently.

That said, the absence of lyrics is as important to lyrics over the course of an album as the lyrics themselves.


To Arabian- No, a single album does not a great lyricist make. I was only citing one example. I like Pink Floyd on the whole -- music, lyrics, and all -- better than any other band I've heard enough music to judge, and I am particularly fond of the lyrics.

Given that you're a Grateful Dead fan, here's a bit of trivia:

In 1969, the Dead played at my high school, Campolindo HS.

Two students put on Santana in the fall and the Dead in the spring for fundraising for their senior class. It's such a shame we don't do good stuff like that these days, all we ever have are shitty bake sales. That said, there are few bands we'd be able to book for cheap that are actually good these days...

Anyway, listen to a recording of the concert the Dead put on here and read some reviews by students who attended...

It seems that the band didn't like being told they're not allowed to smoke, and they also didn't like that one of the school admins turned on the lights part way through a song...

Damn. That's a real short set but still sick that they played your highschool. I still can't believe all the serious responses I got in here when clearly hendrix is far better at guitar. I like nirvana don't get me wrong, but I like a lot of different music. Nirvana didn't even invent grunge, they helped transform it. Floyd and the dead are my top bands for all time. moe., phish, and rre for these days. Not even just hendrix but the raw style of the band and other bands of that era is sick. You can't knock it. With hendrix leading out with ridiculous guitar work the experience is just amazing. I was pumped to get a chance to see mitch mitchell with the hedrix the experience tour in 08. I saw him mid october and he died in november. Being a drummer I was super pumped to get a chance to see him since obviously I never saw hendrix live. And the other people on that tour were pretty sick.

Still a lot of good music out there, but music def reached a peak, and the good music was also the mainstream music. Suck that music died off but whatever, it happens. Good thing with music is it lives on forever. Hearing it live is a bonus treat though.

um, no. The Melvins were playing what became grunge music before nirvana was even a band. but in terms of nirvana/hendrix, im gonna go hendrix. much more influential in the course of history. nirvana came out of hendrix's legacy, as did thousands of other good bands. nirvana's sphere of influence was short lived and the bands that came out of it were the emo/pop punk bands of the early 2000's. thanks for fall out boy, nirvana.....

Hendrix = awesome!

I never, ever, ever listen to Nirvana. I could distinguish 'Come as you are' from 'Smells like teen spirit', but that's about it. I feel quite an ass I even know that.

i'm not saying that they didn't have a big impact in the development of grunge music, but they were not the first band doing it. they were the first band to gain notoriety for what they did, but not the inventors. as for fall out boy, you can trace many aspects of their "punk rock?" back to grunge and other alternative styles of music in the 90's.

For sure. Further tour was rocking this year, much better than dead tour last year. DSO is killing it like always. 7 walkers and rhythm devils are both solid side projects as well.

Grateful Dead 72=where it's at.

Me too currently. Cd's mia. Everything on my old computer, exploded do to viruses and shit. Been streaming the gd radio a bunch though. http://www.gdradio.net/

Since I now lack sirius and all my previous music. Luckily I've been able to gather a start of some good dead shows to get back on my feet.

ahh dude, just read your history, nirvana only commercialized grunge in the 90s, but the genre itself began in the 80's. nirvana called themselves a punk band originally, and soundgarden did release an album on a major label before nirvana. grunge was underground in the 80s much like punk was in the 70s, and only grew a few years later. nirvana revolutionized mainstream music, but other bands influenced the revolution itself, nirvana just got lucky.

I love hendrix but I think for me I put gimour a little bit ahead. Not as much for impact on the guitar, and general ripping, but gilmour had the ability to pierce through your soul on even the most simple part of a song. Favorite guitarist all time.

false, Nirvana has a sound, but it's not THE sound. Jimi was way closer to THE sound than Nirvana could ever dream.

Nirvana plays like 4 chords with heavy distortion while Curt Cobain yells at the top of his lungs cool!

Hendrix doesnt play the guitar he makes it speak, he could be the whole band for all I care. He is the greatest guitar player to every live no one will ever play like him again and no one has.
