Are you kidding? Listen to rock before Hendrix and tell me he's over rated. Also he's not just famous for his songs, but the fact that he was able to improvise such revolutionary sounds without any formal musical knowledge. He was the biggest breath of fresh air since DeBussy... I'll admit I hate Nirvana but at least compare him to somebody who has had a bigger impact on music.

nirvana isn't a bad band, i'm just not as big of a fan. jimi hendrix is ridiculous. as a guitarist i can say that in my opinion jimi's music is much more difficult and complex and sounds much better. -imo

Cobain was mediocre at best.

Hendrix has amazing skills and just represented something amazing.

Where as nirvana revolutionized grunge and some of my fav bands wouldn be around now if it wasn't for there influence.

Alright i admit that hendrix is good, but he's made out to be this god figure, the best there ever was. He was just another name in rock and roll. Kurt cobain on the other hand invented grunge music.

I mean he was good. Not saying he wasn't. Just way over rated. His stage antics and playing festivals like woodstock and monterey pop festival really hooked him up. Without getting some gigs that go him on tv he wouldn't be nearly as popular as he is today. And that star spangled banner? It was all choppy and distorted.

He has some fast fingers though. some sections of songs are really good but saying he's anywhere near the best ever is nuts

Don't listen to either of them very much, but I hate listening to Hendrix.  Sure, he's a way better guitarist, but his music has no rhythym.  I hate the all of his music pretty much.

how about nirvana vs. smash mouth? that's more fitting. jimi is waayy outta nirvana's ballpark. sorry nirvana fans, but i can't just sit down and actively listen to a nirvana album. i've heard their stuff too many times, and it all sounds so similar. i love cranking up my headphones and getting lost in songs like hey joe, i can't really do that with any grunge music.

Smash mouth is a shitty band with 1 or 2 radio hits. Whether you like nirvana or not, they had a huge influence on music and a generation. I don't hate hendrix, people keep mis understanding me. I just don't believe in all the hype. Purple haze was the only song that was really decent

Hendrix is not overrated at all. Name me one guitarist, in that period who sounded like hendrix. No one used the effects he did the same way. No one thought of playing the same way before him. He revolutionized guitar.

Nirvana however, did the same as well. They, along with Pearl Jam, The Stone Temple Pilots, and Soundgarden started the whole grunge movement.

Who contributed more to the progression of guitar? Jimi Hendrix. No question about it. Who wrote better songs? That is up to you to decide.

Hendrix influenced multiple generations long before Cobain ever started whining and playing power chords. Generations from now, people are going to be talking about Hendrix a lot more than Cobain still...

Also, Hendrix definitely isn't my favorite music to listen to, but I am still able to admit that he was objectively the most talented guitarist who ever lived.

First of all, dont underestimate how influential nirvana was. I cant stand them, but they literally revolutionized music. Trust me, Nirvana will be talked about for as long as Hendrix, just in a different way.

I wouldn't compare the two. Way different styles, eras, influences....I do enjoy Nirvana immensley though and Cobain was fucking awesome when it came to distortion he may not have the same capability that Hendrix had but he could make some great sounds neverthe less.

No way. It would throw off the tight sound of nirvana. Hendrix did good enough with his own band anyway. I mean he's massively popular so I guess he has that.

I just like the subtleties is the work of nirvana. You don't need to play super fast or over the top to really get the point of the music through.

I what I originally was getting at is that the reason why Hendrix is considered the best guitarist who ever lived is because of what he created given what he had to start with. All these newer guitarist have had a colorful history of rock music to start on, whereas Hendrix single handedly redefined a genre, highly improvised, by ear, with no musical training.

Personally Dave Gilmour is my favorite, but Hendrix was still a better guitarist because he arguably had the largest impact on music out of anyone in the last century.

There are too many Guitar Gods out there. It's like Mt. Olympus, they're all just up there, each the master of a different thing.

Every Guitar God has a different sound, strong point, genre they mastered and their own generation of followers. So a discussion on this is kind of pointless. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. This is going to turn into a shit show argument. You'll start crying, and I'll start crying.

That being said, Gilmour is also my favourite. Best new example, Red Sky at Night. I can list endless things. Jimi is my second.

I'll be honest, today no one is changing guitar. Everybody is so damn technical. Jeff Loomis, Chris Broderick, Rusty Cooley, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, I could go on forever. The bands as well - if anyone listens to such stuff as Veil of Maya or Between the Buried and me - the technical part is insane. Who can't sweep nowadays? People are forgetting about songwriting. That is why Hendrix and Cobain were amazing - they put so much feeling into so many less notes.

"Something new" does not equal technical prowess. I was just giving an example of somebody who had more technical skill,(something that can be judged objectively). And later in the video he does go beyond tapping with some pretty impressive sweeping lines, with BOTH hands. but remember i also gave my reasons for thinking Hendrix was much more talented. In other words, i basically agree with you, it was more for the sake of argument that i pointed out that it is impossible to be truly objective when ranking a guitarist as "the greatest ever".
