I know a lot of firefighters and I can guarantee they would never watch someones house burn to the ground.

Fuck the Mayor of this city and fuck these firefighters. In fact fuck them even being called fire fighters, from now on they should be know as firepussies. The neighborhood should have beat the shit out of them and used their equipment.

I think there's probably more to this than the article releases...

something tells me that in the past they've put out fires for the people who didn't pay, then never got any sort of payment so they had to make an example.

i still don't get it, why wouldn't you pay?

yea, exactly. its not like they didn't have a choice. The firefighters didn't show up and say fuck you, we're not working today. The cranicks knew they could pay and have fire protection, or risk it, and they got unlucky.

I'd assume if there was someone trapped inside they'd have done something though. Theres a difference between following a policy and being a downright horrible person.

Why would anyone even bother to pay the $75 if they will get the service anyway? It's like car insurance, why would I pay to have it if I'd be covered either way? If I don't have car insurance and I get in a wreck, I'm fucked. What's the difference here? Obviously if human life was at stake that would make it a totally different story, but that's not the case here. They knew they must pay the $75, they didn't. Life is tough.

you sure these firefighters weren't driving around in a salamander or a beetle?

75 dollars probably goes to fund the firefighting operations in that town. i guess if you hold out on 'supporting them' through a tax then its their way of pay back.

Thats fucking awesome, and I wish every politician would have the balls to enforce policy like this. the crannicks sound like the freeloading fuckers that are ruining america. if you can afford a mortgage, you can afford 75 dollars a year in tax money to pay the costs of running a firehouse. they deserved to have their house burn for being such cheapskates.

the area the people lived in doesn't have it's own firefighter service, which I assume they decided on sometime ago. As a result, they don't have an obligatory tax for fire service. So they pay nothing for fire service. The nearest city kindly offers their fire service, but since it's out of the way and not really part of their zone, you pay $75 per year for it.

these people did not pay, so their house burned to the ground. I assume the firefighters showed up just in case someone was hurt, but more likely because one of the neighbors who HAD paid was at risk of having their home catch fire. So just to be sure the responsible person who paid was safe, they came.

How is that bullshit? Provided the municipality gave sufficient, obvious notice that payment of the $75 was required for fire department coverage, and the house fire posed no significant danger to other people or structures, nonpayment of the fine should result in your being on your own if your house catches fire.

It is unfortunate that their house is gone, yes. Is the town's policy shocking in some ways? Of course. Should it be changed? Yeah, probably.

But, as Norred said, if you run a known risk, prepare for the consequences. Bottom line. Facts and logic were running the game in this story, and they played it out. Should've paid the $75. Somebody in that poor family smoke? Give it up for a week, save your house.

Exactly. And then the fact that they actually came to help with the neighbors property then left with the one house still burning.

Fuck them all. Regardless of what you're told, if you are there put the damn fire out.

Turns out, the neighbor had paid the fee.

I'm sorry, i'm looking at this objectively. Of course I am sympathetic to their loss of a home and possessions, we all should be. That sucks.

they showed up because the neighbor's house was at risk, and he'd paid. they didnt just drive all the way out there to tell this guy they couldn't help, then watch his house burn down before going back to the station.

I myself am I firefighter.  I would NEVER sit and watch a family's home burn.  How fucked up is this town for letting this happen.  This family lost so much over $75.  Fuck that mayor too!  How can anyone claiming to be a firefighter sit and watch someones home burn to the ground.  That pisses me off.  

I do not agree with this at all.  I hope this family sues somehow and takes this town for a lot of money.

i sympathize for the guy, i mean, he did lose his house and his possessions, but it was his own fault for doing it. He put the firefighters in a bad position that they shouldn't have had to deal with. It may be a stupid policy, but i doubt any of the firefighters wanted to risk losing their jobs due to this guy being cheap and not forking out the $75.

I'd be more upset if they were on strike, or for some reason simply refused to do it, but in this case, the homeowner brought it on himself.

While it is fucked up that they just let the house burn, its only $75. Why the fuck wouldn't you pay it? And I definitely agree with having a higher charge for those who don't pay and then have to have the firefighters come out. That would be a better way than basically telling the family to fuck off.

I'm a firefighter too and I agree with the firefighters on scene that followed their orders and didn't put the fire out. Firefighting costs a lot of money, even with a volunteer department they still have to buy the trucks, pay for gas, pay for maintenance on the trucks and pay for all the protective gear that saves our asses. The citizens of this area have been repeatedly given the option of establishing an annual tax to fund the department which would gaurentee every house fire protection. Instead the citizens have voted down this funding method and the fire department had to resort to the subscription method by which those who pay are protected and those who don't press their luck and hope their house doesn't burn. As I've said above firefighting isn't cheap and if everyone freeloads of the fire department then eventually no one will be able to get fire protection because the fire deparment will grow broke

I pay a little over 40 for car insurance. My car is my only major investment I've made so far in my life. If it was wrecked I'd be loosing all my money and investment. But no insurance company would cut me some slack if I didn't pay my fee.

something tells me that not paying the fee for the only firefighting service in the region somehow invalidates your fire insurance coverage. Would you willing put car insurance on a car the owner was entering in a demolition derby?

Also read somewhere that the fire started because they were burning trash in a barrel. Mmmm once again, something tells me not having paid the fire fee, then having lit the fire yourself, to burn something illegally....probably makes it quite a bit harder to argue for the insurance.

Reasonable. If no one is paying the fees then they gotta make an example. I doubt it was the firefighters decision either, they probably were just following orders. Now if someone was in the house or in any sort of danger, then they should have by all means saved them anyway.

More Fallout Following House Fire

South Fulton police arrested one of Gene Cranick's sons, Timothy Allen Cranick, on an aggravated assault charge. When officers arrived at the firehouse Wednesday, South Fulton Fire Chief David Wilds was in an ambulance receiving medical treatment. Police said Cranick was upset firefighters weren't putting out the fire and attacked the chief. The South Fulton city manager said Wilds was treated and released and will recover just fine.

The incident is shining new light on a policy that's got a lot of people upset. But Union City Fire Chief Kelly Edmison is defending the firefighters in South Fulton.

"If somebody is trapped in the house we're going to go because life safety is number one but we can't give the service away," Edmison said. "It's not South Fulton's problem. It's not Union City's problem. It's the county's problem. There is no county fire department."

i agree with people saying they should 've paid it and its their own fault, but just imagine through some mishap in the billing someone forgets paying or his payment is lost or something...

i think that both the fire department/city would be much better off if they 'd just punish them with a huge fine, that way you get a win win situation where the homeowner can keep his house but will have to pay a shitload to the fire dept. ...

found this somewhere else, and it sums it up nicely

1. The fire occured in OBION
2. The firefighters were from neighboring FULTON
3. The people of FULTON pay taxes to support the FULTON fire department
4. The people of OBION do not pay taxes to the city of FULTON and do not support the FULTON fire department
5. The FULTON fire department offered to extend services to OBION residents for a reasonable FEE
6. The fee covers the added COST of extending this service to OBION residents, so that the people of FULTON don't have to subsidize the people of OBION who have chosen to live in an unincorporated area where they pay no local taxes and have no fire department.
7. If a person opts out of the negligible fee then they have no right to the service.

I understand that the firefighters were just doing their job and making an example of the family or whatever, but it's pretty fucked that they wouldn't save the house.  I can't even imagine what the family must have felt as they were watching their house burn to the ground and nobody helping.  All over fucking 75 dollars.  Both sides of this story are retarded.

Yeah, you are right. Except $2000 would not be nearly enough. You aren't talking about the cost of putting out that fire, you are talking about the cost of having access to the service. The $75 fee is low because the chances of your house burning down are low. A more reasonable amount for on the spot service might be about $50k. That is a total estimate, but the point is that the amount it would cost to provide service this way would be more than the fire department would be able to bill some trash burning rednecks who were too cheap to pay $75 for a fire department.

If they don't stick to their guns on issues like this, there wouldn't be a fire service for anybody because the system would fall apart.

As some point as people they should have given a fuck about other people. Even if they only showed up to put the other fire out, at least put the house fire.

I in no way agree with the guy not paying the $75 if he knew it put his house at risk. But for the mayor and firefighters to say, hahaha serve's you right for not paying is just fucked up. They should have put the fire out fined him a big charge for doing so but save his fucking house.


Anyone who sees this as being the right thing to do is either 12 or has a twisted mind.

the thing is, as highlighted above by another poster, the a la carte services would cost a shit ton of money that would in all probability never be paid. Insurance/fees like these, are a gamble you take. you can't buy car insurance after you crash your car, what would make buying fire fighting services after your house already caught on fire any different? the actual cost of putting out the fire, if you calculate the cost of training the firefighters, keeping them stationed at the firehouse, the cost of renting/owning the firehouse, fire trucks, and equipment, as well as the salaries of the firefighters if they aren't volunteers, could easily cost 50-100grand per house fire. unless the person had the cash on hand, I wouldn't put the fire out if I were running the fire department. the homeowner gambled and lost. simple.

Firefighters are not the same as an insurance company. Tax money doesn't go towards insurance (until recently).

Firefighters are their to protect, not for profit. They should put out any fire in their path and worry about the money later. Fuck them.
