It would be more accurate to compare Tanner to Tiger Woods.  Both used to be the best athletes in their respective sports, but recently they have become second rate.

in my eyes, jon. tanner might have the slight edge in the BC, but ive seen Jon ski gnarly AK lines too. both slayed in pipe and slope. and while tanner did moguls, im not sure he was ever quite on the level that jon is in GS now. but that shouldnt take anything away from tanner. they both kill it. a ton.

Dane Tudor is a way better rounded skier, he slays the pow and can more than hold his own in big air and rails. (his pipe is a lot worse than tanners but tanner is also not very good at rails)

no racing or moguls or anything of that sort.

whoever that was that said candide is also dead on. but again, all these guys are awesome. without them this sport wouldnt be what it is.

^^I agree with Jon and Candide on the same level as Tanner.

Dane, a great well rounded skier but not even close to the level those guys are one. Please Remember Tanner once dominated slope with numerous medals at x games as well as pipe. ow he's one of the top back country athletes.

Dane, well he had a good segment last year.

dont get me wrong jon, dane, and even tom are amazing skiers, but tanner hall is a legend. yea we on ns like to make fun of him for the ridiculous things he says but the fact of the matter is skiing would not be where it is today without tanner. he dominated before chads gap. came back from a potential career ending injury and still dominated in every regard. im excited to see how he comes back from his most recent injury. hope he competes at xgames again. and if he wins it im pretty sure its safe to say hes the best of all time. I personally have the up most respect for tanner, his skills, and what he did to the sport. (candide rocks too..)

I would say as far as most rounded skier Candied is one or two. Tanner is aswell. Dane tudor in third and jon olson in 9000th.....

reasonably pointless hypothetical debate but fun to get involved with anyway, whilst Tanner is an incredible skier he is very well rounded with in freestyle , as I am sure you will agree is Candide, how ever when it comes to freeriding one destroys the other, there is not a chance in Hell that Tanner could lift the FWT, I mean that in no way to be offensive, he still charges. His main disadvantage is being human which Candide isn't.

I kinda of agree that tanner might not be capable of winning the backcountry events like candide who just slays everything big, but I feel like they have such different, nearly equivalent in greatness, styles now. Tanner is more pillows and powder now and candide is more like big lines and such.

I'm not a Tanner fanboy, but his urban section from EDIAS last year was pretty gnarly... he had some rail transfers on sets of down bars that I had to watch over again even to believe. I don't think he's the #1 most rounded skiier, but still I don't think it's fair to say he's "not very good" at rails.

Regardless of where Tanner is or isn't this season... He's In among the top ter of the sport. He's had 2 major injuries. As he matures he probably won't be focused on competitions this season. If you haven't been paying attention to his summer edits through out his knees' rehab he's just stoked to be getting back on snow. He has a host of other successful entrepreneurial enterprises. It has been really cool to watch the entire evolution of Tanner from a young punk blowing up the Mammoth & Whistler parks. His Gorilla steez phase, 2004 where he sucked in pipe. 2008 lay's down one of the most technical pipe runs ever up until that point winning Xgames gold. Which he has just a few of... His skills in the backcountry where it doesn't matter how fast you get down the mountain on film it's about how good you look doing it.



My opinion is everyone should stop talk so much shit and just enjoy skiing.



There's no question Tanner has a pretty bombass lifestyle. He shoots from his hip. Goes with his gut. Most of what he say's genuinely comes from the heart. And, Does what he wants.


I'm pretty sure he'll be happy just to be riding this season and stoked of life.

I might give Candide or Jon the nod for 1st over Tanner only because of their accomplishments outside of the freeskiing world. (GS, moguls etc..) I know Tanner started out in moguls when he was a youngin' but these guys are still at it which I think is what makes them more "well rounded."
Either way they are all amazing and its been fun watching them over the last 10 or so years.

Shit I didn't mean to post yet but. Tanner: Slays pipe, has some urban skills, won numerous x games slope medals, and is awesome at pillows. Jon: revolutionized big air, still creates doubles and new tricks, and is really good at racing. Candide: slays pipe, has urban and slopestyle skills, and is ridiculous at backcountry. They are all amazing and I don't think any one could really be better than the lther

Not to get into this topic that has been beat to death so many times BUT, I always loved Tanner's urban section in TBC. That nollie always got me so stoked.

As for my opinion...Candide/Tanner then Jon.

Everyone always mentions Jon as one of the top well-rounded skiers, but I guess I've never seen much proof of this. I've only seen him killing jumps, pipe and GS. Never seen much tech railwork, big cliffs, pillow lines, or AK lines from him. Where could I look to find some of this?

From what I've seen, Tanner and Candide are tied for the top spot.


And yeah that segment from Tanner is one of the most moving segments of all time.

if you search through his videoblog back to a year or two ago, there's a few episodes from preseason at breck and keystone where he is slaying rails with dumont i think, and he won't blow your mind wallisch style, but he is very respectably good
