well i'm not looking to spend more than 200 so that should answer it? And considering that i own a d40, i don't think i want a 2000$ lens...

No, you haven't answered my question yet. Do you even know what lens you are looking to purchase? There are multiple versions of the 80-200, and so far you haven't specified which one your looking for yet.....

dude, you clearly don't know what your talking about at this point seeing how you haven't told NS what lens(es) you are looking for

saying 80-200 is like saying your looking for a Nikon D__, theres not enough info.....

lets try this again shall we? Which 80-200 version(s) are you looking for? Is that the only tele zoom your interested in?

The fact that you cannot articulate what you want in a lens leads me to believe that you have done absolutely no research. You really should look up the lenses and see what you are getting into, because there are many versions and they will perform very differently from each other.

What you should be looking for (at least, what I would personally look for) is an 80-200 f/2.8 AF D (two touch). It will work with your autofocus. This will run you a lot more than 200 bucks though. My advice to you is to save up and buy a quality lens and not cheap out on a super old lens (with exceptions, but you must figure out which old lenses are good and which are shit) and/or an off-brand lens that sucks (again, not all do, but do your research).

bottom line is you wont find an 80-200 for $200 bucks. And fyi, the people posting here are trying to help you. dont give them a hard time. give them more info and they will help you...

I completely agree with you, but you can get a certain 80-200s for under $200, two examples would be the f4 AI-S and the f4.5 AI-S

whoops! my mistake. I didnt even know that Nikon made an f/4 and f/4.5. Regardless, I would save up for the f/2.8. The extra stop would be especially helpful with a d40 in low light since the high ISO performance sucks.

This. I use the 2.8 version and the extra stop really does make all the difference.
it doesn't really matter what camera body you have but the glass is really what you want to aim at obtaining. I mean, a D3X would be awesome but if it's that over a set of nice glass and a d40 then i'd have to take the glass. just my 2cents

I almost hate having to get into this thread, because its just going to turn into another bitch fest.

Just because a lens doesn't have a fixed aperture doesn't mean it sucks. Theres soooo many other things that define a lens and its worth. I've seen many non-fixed ap lenses that outperform current fixed ap primes. (Yes I'm aware all primes are fixed, more for OPs benefit.)

It can be called a slower lens, yes. It might even be a worse lens, but its not necessarily worse SIMPLY because it isn't fixed aperture.

I thinks we may need to establish that F/x is the aperture. A lens with an F/2.8 is generally going to be more expensive than a lens with an F/4 (what you should be looking for). Of course there are other factors such as ultrasonic AF and image stabilization that you should consider.

This thread is out of hand.

He wants something that's 80-200 ish.

He wants to spend about 200.

Does anyone have anything that will work for him that they would consider selling? If so, post it. I'm sure other focal lengths that cover a similar range would also work fine.



He doesn't care about what lens it is, if it's in that general range it will work. The fact that he hasn't done research and doesn't care should tell you that he's not considering any of the 2.8 versions, if you didn't get that from the fact he was only looking to spend 200 to begin with.


OP - go to KEH.com and look there. Also, look at craigslist. Hopefully someone will help you out on here. I don't have anything but I hope this post will stop future posting from people with nothing to sell you! haha.

They aren't trying to quiz your knowledge of gear, they are trying to figure out what you are wanting. Holy shit I understand that you're trying to help. I know what I want. I stated what I want. A 200$ 55-200mm nikon lens. I know very little about camera's, I read all of your posts and that stuff means nothing to me, at least not with my experience with cameras. That info might come in handy if and when I start to get involved in photography alot. But at the moment, I'm highly entertained with a low quality camera and low quality lens setup. There's no way in hell that I can purchase a 2000$ lens right now. If I had 2000$, I would go buy my skis for this season, but no, I don't. I cut vegetables at the grocery store and earn minimum wage to help sustain my expensive but well worth it skier lifestyle. Now I'm just trying to add a new hobby to my collection; photography. Back to the point where if I wanted to know what the difference between a 2000$ lens and a 200$ lens is I would've asked questions.

I understand that you guys are trying to help me but I think that you guys should be helping me with bio,chem and physics homework instead, thats where i need help. Anyways
I don't want to start shit I'm just saying what I think, and what I want

Calling Karma Rape, chirps, and people telling me that grade 11 is a breeze.

You know, I kind of wanted to make a smart ass comment about how this is the first time you've mentioned a 55-200, but I really feel like you would give us your whole life story again. And I just don't want that.

This is what I want you to do. Step out of your own little world, re-read this entire thread. Then apologize to everyone on here. The only person that EVER mentioned a $2000 lens, is you. The only person that never tried to help you, is you. The only person that failed to answer even the simplest questions, is you.

Now heres my suggestion which I feel you may of already came to. You're best bet, is the Nikon 55-200 4-5.6. New, they are around $180..though I can guarantee you can get one used for around $120 (Craiglist.com for local, KEH.com for higher priced used - always in stock, or Fredmiranda.com for forum based selling - lowest prices.)

Everybody's been helpful so far except yourself, they've given you suggestions, places to buy, taught you a little about aperture, and a whole boatload of other stuff they DIDN'T HAVE TO DO. Instead of a thank-you or even an "All right, I decided to go with _____" you fucking bump your thread?

You gave NS a budget and an extremely vague description of what you want. NS gave you answers, AND went out of the way to try to find out more specifically what you want. And you've done nothing but show us that you've taken nothing from it and that you are an ungrateful bitch.

I suppose you want an answer, though, so just fucking order a lens already. I'm sure it's not hard to go on B&H, click lenses, sort by price and focal length, and choose one from the list. If you expected personal input on the quality of one lens against another, I'm pretty sure you aren't going to get it by now.

Alright bud, I understand that people are helping me. And I hope you understand the concept of "bumping" threads.
Just a refresher, the purpose of "bumping" a thread is to put it on the front page so that non-frequent users of NS have a better chance of seeing it when clicking the selected forum category.

PS no i don't want your fucking opinion again, I want a lens. Preferably off of NS, because I could potential trade stuff that the seller might want.
