Im looking for a camera and im willing to spend somewhere in the 500 to 1000 dollar range. ive only got experience with film, hardly any experience or knowledge when it comes to digital. if possible id like the ability to use full manual controls. and i dont want something big. this will be used about 50% for skiing and 50% for everything else, and i just know im not gonna bring it anywhere if i got some big bulky slr. something i could fit in a chest pocket on my jacket would be great. ive been looking at the leica d-lux and v-lux cameras mostly since a friend recommended them. they look pretty legit. but i dont know what specific d-lux or v-lux model to get. or if anyone could recommend another camera that would be awesome.
s90/95 is a solid little camera. canon owns all for point and shoots in my opinion. if you want to go a little bigger, but still compact, but have the advantage of more zoom, a hot shoe, a swivel lcd, and some other fun stuff, check out the g11/g12. great cameras with a little more bang than a basic point and shoot, and still fairly compact. theyd fit in a jacket pocket just fine, just not your jeans pocket probably.
s95, its slightly newer, and has hd video. I think that a g series or a p7000 would be a little to thick. The s90 got virtually flawless reviews, and the s95 is the same, just updated
alright i think i got it narrowed to the g12, the leica d-lux 5, and the panasonic lx5. as i understand the d-lux is pretty much a lx5 with a different body. but it comes with 200$ editing software which is something i would definitely want. so the 700$ price seems somewhat reasonable. so between the lx5 and the d lux, id go for the d lux. so its pretty much between the g12 and the dlux.
havent looked into the s95 much yet. any reason the s95 would be better than the d lux5 or lx5?
the one thing i dont like about the g12 is the size, if its a pain to carry around at all im gonna use it about half as much as i would if i could just slip it in my pocket and forget about it.
s95 is tiny. and 2.0 is stupid fast for a p&s lens. plus full manual controls, and raw, and the ring as mentioned is super cool. dont know much about leica digital cams.
the leica is basically a rebodied lx5, that comes with editing software and a couple more goodies.
if i remember right the lx5/d lux 5 shoots like 2.5 or something, and has full manual control's. and what exactly is raw? and not sure what the ring is either.
that's a good question. I'd much rather go for the s95. Canon must have destroyed their g series sales with the s90 and s95. so many advanced features for so much less than the flagship g cameras.
raw allows you to shoot lossless images, rather than compressed formats like JPEGs, all the data is there, which lets you do more work in post without it looking as bad.
neither of those other cameras looks bad, but i personally am a canon guy through and through, and ive had excellent experiences with all their point and shoots.
oh and the ring is hard to explain, google some reviews. but it definitely makes quick adjustments more efficient on the fly, since a p&s like that lacks the buttons and dials of a dslr body.
