It all depends on what kind of lifting you are doing. For everyday gym stuff, Vibram's or anything else with a minimal sole are awesome.
I do a lot of olympic lifting (snatches, clean and jerks) and tons of squatting. I used dedicated olympic lifting shoes. The completely flat surface and solid plastic heel gives you the most efficient transfer of energy and the raised heel helps you get in the best possible position (helps open up the hips better). I use Nike Romaleos 2 but lots of people like Adidas:
For normal workouts I use Reebok Nano's. No raised heel, but flat sole and stiff, minimal cushioning:
I still use my Vibram's for running every now and again, but they don't get a lot of use anymore.
