Convince me either way: 7D vs 60D

Yes. Convince one way or another. There will be a $441 dollar difference for me, which is what makes me want the 60D, but then again the photo capabilities of the 7D draw me in. I'm also leaning towards the 60D because it means I'd be able to pick up a new lens with it right away. (i'm thinking the tamron 17-50 2.8) I'm a photo guy, but I want to start playing with everything filming, so either camera fills that need.
Essentially all im asking for is words to tip be over the edge and get a 7D or something grounding to make me go with a 60D.
opinions, please. (I know M&A revels in this kind of thing)

The 60D is made of plastic, i don't know what else could turn you away from a camera more lol!
Buy a 7D and then save up money for a 70-200 or 24-105 (or both) after.

Hmm....
honestly I'd get a 7D and then save up for extra glass later.
8 frames per seconds on photo just kills the 60D.
Or you could actually pull a Jamie Walter, and grab a used 1D Mk2 body (like $600) and then get a t2i new for around (600) and then grab a prime that will work with both.

no.....
You should honestly go for the 7D. It's certainly 400 dollars better and you'll definitely get more out of it.
If you want a plastic bodied camera, you might as well cheap out and get the T2i.

i'd take a 7d over both of those cameras....
having two sensor sizes would suck.

to be honest, the whole 8 frames per second thing isn't that big of a deal. I'm not big on action shooting at all to the whole "gotta get the shot!" doesnt apply to me. But thanks guys, I'm seriously considering the 7D.

makes sense. Ultimately the 7d is just a professional body. it's just so much more robust and I'm sure you would love it.
Do you plan on shooting in snow?

okay I understand.
Personally I shoot a lot of skateboarding and plan on a lot of skiing, and my camera shoots at 2.5 fps, which blows cock for skateboarding and will only be good sequencing box tricks in skiing

because you are a photog first and video second, id say 7d hands down. in terms of features its a far better photo camera. and personally i like the body/layout a lot more.

agreed. if you were just using it for video, i would say the 60d or even t2i, but since you are a photog first, 7d blows them all out of the water.

also, something that makes quite a big difference but thats overlooked a lot is the physical layout of the camera. now the difference between the button layout on the 60d and the 7d aren't as big as the 7d and the t2i, but there are still some. the 60d lacks the column of buttons on the left hand side of the camera that the 7d has, and I'm not sure if the row of buttons above the small screen on the top have double functions (check into that one) like it's big brother.

Well I would probably go for the 7D, but as an owner of a 50D I can say that the xxD line is still really solid. It may not be considered truly "professional" but the build quality, button layout, and certainly the image quality are all very good. Nicer than the xti I used to own, although that was capable of quite a lot as well. The 7D might be a nicer camera overall, but the 60D will still be sick. If you really have to have the best then you could argue that the 7D is shitty and you should go for a 1-series instead. 1D mk IV anyone?

My buddy has a 7D and I'll be honest: every time I use it I am blown away by the quality of the images and the camera. It is built like a tank and will keep out water if you use it in light rain or snow. The ISO on the camera would be enough to make me buy one (if I didn't own all this Nikon glass...). I'm not sure how the ISO on the 60D compares to the 7D, but I believe that it is not as good. Having good high ISO performance is really really really nice to have. The photos look amazing as well. Because you are not as big on video, I think you will enjoy the photo capabilities of the 7D a lot more than the video from the 60D.

I own a 7D and have shot a lot with it. As a photographer, fps only matters if you are gonna do sequences. Good photographers only need one click to get the shot but I must say sometimes I do get lazy and do small bursts and choose the best but when working with lights you typically only get one chance to get the shot per hit. But back to the question at hand, I would save up for the 7D because it is weather sealed and doesn't have a plastic body. Also a lot of the buttons can be customized so it helps you shoot efficiently.

You are underestimating it. I used mine for the first time in the heaviest rain I have even seen and it was 110% fine. I also had a weather proof lens on though.

I have used my 7D, 24-105 f/4L IS, and 580 ex ii in heavy rain as well with no issues at all. all weather sealed of course

Thats awesome! I've never taken my camera (D200) out in heavy rain and didn't know that it could handle a situation like that.

I was nervous at first but I googled and and found a guy who dropped his 5d (slightly better weatherproofing) in arctic water and he pulled it instantly and it was fine. i think he got lucky though.

It seems to me that many of you think that the 60d has the same kind of plastic body that the 550d has. True, it is not a magnesium frame, but it is a tough polymer and feels almost exactly like the 7d when held. The articulating screen is also very nice. If you shoot sequences, the the extra frame rates may be nice. But the magnesium body is not worth the 400 in my view, when you could use the extra money for glass.

The 60D is just a T2i with a hipstamatic and other useless features. Don't waste your money if you plan on doing photography.

exactly. 7d has better AF (for photos obviously) 1/250th flash sync. wayyyy better button layout. 8fps burst (still nice to have even if you dont use it much. its just a better camera.

60D is essentially a Rebel replacement, not a true continuation of the XXD series. 7D is a whole other league. Buy a 7D, you will not regret it.
