I know, another help with a business thread but I've been wondering about this idea for awhile and it seems to me that there is a big enough sneakerhead crowd on NS that you guys could be of help to me. If I started a business that sold Nike SBs on facebook, solecollector.com and newschoolers I would get any business. If it goes well enough I would maybe even make a website. If you have any suggestions or you think this is a good or bad idea. Comment. +K for good ideas. Thanks so much.
I can see how it would seem like a good idea, but its a lot easier said than done. You would have to have a wholesale contract with nike, but if you are selling it for a lower price than everyone else, you arent going to make much profit at all...
i dunno if this is a joke, or how specifically nike works, but i'd be wagering on a chance that nike might shut you down should you open without them, because you don't have authorization to sell their stuff. i'm not saying it's a guarantee, i just know nike is very specific about who they allow to sell their products legitimately.
nike hates entrepreneurs and solo companies. to get a wholesale contract with nike you either have to sell their shit at MSRP for a while like Jenifa said, or have worked for a shop that sold nike products and you built an amazing relationship with your rep while you were there. Trust me, it sounds like an awesome idea because I love my SB fetish....if you can stick out the "probation period" of selling MSRP then do it up, but contact nike and get the story from them first.
wait are you trying to do first party sales, or resell shoes? either way you have an uphill battle, as there are companies like flight club that pretty much have the aftermarket covered.
It's called a saturated market, meaning that there really isn't much room to wiggle in there. Basically, if you wan't to succeed you need to come up with something that other people aren't doing, or find some way to make yourself better than the competitors.
Give it a try man, the upside to an online business is there really isn't a lot of start up costs, the downside is that 90 percent fail miserably.
I'm not saying that I would make a website but it would be on this group on FB. Pretty big shoe culture going on in NYC and kids make some big profits.
if you're in NYC and you aren't already in the game, nobody is going to buy from you. it's the most developed sneaker culture in the world with the possible exception of tokyo.
I have been in the footwear industry for close to 10 years.
1. You need to have an account with nike to sell their shoes.
2. Opening orders have to be in the thousands of dollars.
3. Sneakers are a billion $ industry and lifestyle(sb's) are only about 5% of that business.
4. In all my time selling sneakers lifestyle are the hardest to sell because you are dealing with a younger client that is indesicive and fads come and go.
Look up the new balance p790ct. It is the original James Worthy shoe. I bought 6 pairs for my store in March for the celtics Lakers finals. Im still sitting on 4.
so you've heard of Flight Club, Premium Goods, The Rivington Club, DQM, and the other dozens of established shops in NYC that already buy and sell rare and vintage sneaks right? as someone previously mentioned, its a saturated market, especially if you're from new york city. I may come off as harsh, but I'm just trying to save you from putting a bunch of work into a business that is guaranteed to not succeed, especially if you think you can do sales through facebook, and then "eventually make a website". If you were in an emerging market where there is room for a few more sneaker shops, and you did a bit more research into what it takes to start a successful business, then I'd say go for it, but as it stands, not a good idea, and I'd strongly recommend against it.
Like I said, I'm not trying to be a dick, I just don't want to see you dump a bunch of cash into a venture that is super risky, try something safer first.
If you are still considering this idea, especially after all the posts in this thread, I really hope you do something else with your money. Bad idea is bad.
To create any kind of online business, you really have to build a community of people around what you do. Using low prices as your only marketing ploy doesn't do it anymore.
To go into the shoe business, you also need to be REALLY well capitalized. Every style you get, you need to have a full size run, so there's a lot of inventory involved.
I might suggest starting a blog about sneakers and just start driving some web traffic to get your dick wet. Once you have a community behind you, then consider if introducing an online store will work.
