I cant wait to see this movie, even tho i dunno how you can cram 10+ years of a war into 1 movie, like filming WW2, i dont think it will work.
Also, having read the iliad, i'm surprised by the fact that so many characters are actually missing from this movie.
I wonder if Achilles and Paris will be the bitches of the story like in the Iliad, but i doubt it.

I like brad pitt, hes pretty good actor, I don't know how he'd do in a war movie though, but we'll see. I don't really know the story of Troy oth rthan the basic troy horse crap, it does seem like a sick movie.

in ancient civilizations class we discussed Homers 'Odyssy'. there was no way that it could have possibly happened. the story of the trojan war is in no way historically accurate. im to tired to pull out the facts, but if someone wants to challenge me ill probably prove you wrong. im sure the movie would be sick though, it had a huge budget so the special effects will be good.

yeah, people that don't like Brad Pitt are morons, he's a badass in all of his movies, especially Snatch. And who cares about Orlando Bloom in this movie, he is playing the part of the biggest pussy in the story. Although he kills Achilles, but he didn't do much of the work on that one.

its based on Iliad, not Odessey. And yeah, Brad Pitt is a pretty sweet actor, it will be interesting to see how he does in this type of movie.

I read the iliad, and most of the other trojan epics. I dont remember one instance when it mentioned achilles being gay, although it is a great possibility.
My favourite of all of them, was the one where Telemonian Aias went crazy and killed himself because he lost to oddyseus in a competition.

What i dont understand is how they put in so many characters that werent even in pretty much any of the books from the iliad, or the other recovered epics, and take away ppl like Diomedes, and make the 2 Aias' 1. Diomedes had 2 books from the iliad devoted to him, and was big in a few others, but he aint in that movie.

The review of the movie after the Cannes Film Festival said that Troy was 'ruined'(they didn't use this word,but rather a metaphor implying the Heel of Achilles)by the poor interpretation offered by Mr.Pitt.Still,I want to see it.The battles might be epic.

i heard it on the radio that it is the movie of the summer. we are going on a trip to see it with my history class. we are driving 4 hours to see it and do some other shit and stay the night in a hotel.

I'm talking about the iliad, where it never mentions it. columbia encyclopedia can eat its heart out.
OK, spoilers herein.

Menalaus is not killed by hector. Aias is not killed by hector, instead its a draw and they exchange gifts. Achilles' son kills priam(not in the iliad, but another one of the trojan war epics, there's like 9 others.) Agamemnon wasnt killed by Briseus, he was killed by Elektra his wife. Aeneas was a bigger part in the iliad than his little 'cameo' in this movie. The sword of troy was never mentioned, and why was it given to Paris? Achilles was killed before the trojan horse was even created. Theodorus, was made up. Bogarius was made up. Diomedes was left out. Briseus was a 'prize', and it was Chryseus who was the apollonian guards daughter. None of them were related to Hector. Aias kills himself when he loses a funeral game to Oddyseus. Agamemnon was a good warrior, in this story he was the biggest bastard ever. Menalaus loved Helen. Helen hated paris it was totally physical. Paris was hated by everbody. Paris wasnt even close to as honourable as in this film. Patroclus was NOT achilles's cousin, but i understand why they said he was. Cousin was meant as 'relation' in the iliad. All the greek princes went to war, not because they were conquered, but because they made a pact to protect Helen of Sparta. The actual war took place over 10 years, not 14 days. Hector's son was killed. Achilles fought the majority of the war, it was the ninth year of fighting when they raided a port, where they got briseus and chryseus. Also, they removed the most touching part of the iliad, when hector puts down his helmet to hold his son.
I'll think of even more difference.

Except some of the battle scenes, this movie was pure cheese.

I liked it, but I dont know if it followed the story or not, but apparently it didn't. I liked how it portrayed the theme of the futility of war. It showed so well that war is whaat brings people apart, and like a poem we are reading in english, it seems to show us that people are enemies only because of war, and most people in the war are not even there for the same values as their leaders. The line 'Young men die while old men talk' or some such in the movie is a good message. I liekd the movie.

Probert, it was never explicitly stated in the Iliad that Achilles and Patroclus had a homosexual relationship. Sex between two men wasn't 'homosexuality,' it was an accepted relationship between master and servant, or between conqueror and conquered. That's not homosexuality, because all of these men, Achilles included, had wives as well. I guess the most you could say is that they were bisexual, although having sex with a male servant or slave wasn't really even considered 'sex.'

Petek, good analysis, but you gotta remember they can't do everything right or the movie would be ten hours long to fit in all the necessary details- and then it would confuse the hell out of all of us.

That sucks about Diomedes, though... he was a badass.

i already posted this in the other troy thread but...

Brad Pitt has been an enormously crucial agent to Troy's profits, however their annoying prostitution of his body and sex appeal has been a huge hit to the movies credibility as a 'good' film (not to mention its historical innacurracies and horrible reprodutions of artifacts). waaaaaaaaaaaay too much focus on brad pitt. achilles wasn't especially known (please correct me if i am talking out of my ass) for being an especially good looking guy. if anyone should have recieved that much focus it was helen. after all she was 'the face that launched a 1000 ships.' it was just annoying and waaaay overboard. i have no doubt in my mind that his role and focus in the film will not only bring enormous profits, but it will also increase his number of overobsessed ugly women stalkers exponentially.

the only girl i've ever loved was born with roses in her eyes. but then they buried her alive one evening in 1945 with just her sister at her side and only weeks before the guns all came and rained on everyone. now she's a little boy in spain playing pianos filled with flames on empty rings around the sun.

Alpinecowboy is right, they should have focussed WAY more on Helen. This is one of the most complex characters in the history of all literature, and they basically make her into a cheap adulteress. She should be hating herself, and want to go back to Menelaus, and then not, and then wanting to die, and so on. One of the great Sophists at one point came to Athens to deliver a series of lectures, two of which were on Helen. The first day, he came in and praised her as a great female heroine. The second day, he returned and decried her as a villainous witch. That sums uo how multifaceted a character Helen is. This should have been at least as long as LOTR if they'd wanted to do it right.

hey Petek i really liked your summary but a few other changes you left out, sorry if i missed them.

I believe you were talking about Ajax when you said Aias, as in Telemonian Ajax? he is also the cousin of Achilles in the book where Patroclus is just a really good friend of Achilles. I also think they didnt make him enough of a badass. In the book he is portryed as a warrior as great as any of the other kings of Greece.
In general i really enjoyed the movie. Bana did such a good job as Hector and Pitt did pretty well as achilles, but just think if they had used Russel Crowe for achilles, i think that could have been super sick

The version of the iliad i have read, Ajax was spelt Aias, Achilles was Achilleus, and Troy was Iliam. Aias was the only guy i didnt know before reading the Iliad, so i spelt his name like i read in the books. But i know its pronounced Ajax.
There was more than one Aias. Telemonian and the smaller guy.
I like how in the iliad, they have entire books dedicated to each of the major princes. At one point Diomedes was the best fighter on the battlefield, then Aias, then Agamemnon, then Menalaus(not in that order tho). And another thing i didnt like about the movie, was how little they illustrated how important chariots actually were. In the movie, they seemed to always get in the way.

It was against patroclus i do believe. And its very significant, because thats when the 'snowball of death' happens. Sarpedon tells patroclus that he's next, patroclus tells hector he's next, hector tells achilles he's next, etc.
Diomedes was an important character, because he incorporated each of the prince's talents in himself, and represented the entire greek army.
Also, i love the scene in the iliad, where they all exchange armour.

i enjoyed the movie. yeah, there were a lot of things left out and changed, but i thought they still told a pretty good story. eric bana did a great job, the rest of the actors were ok, and the directing was kind of weak at times, but overall i did enjoy the movie.
