NS hate

I think all the hate on NS is and has been getting out of hand. Ive only been on here probably six months and everyday I see other skiers get dicked by people that have been on here a while.
We are all skiers on this website, but the sad thing is probably on a fourth of all freestyle skiers are on here. I am one of the two skiers from my mountain that get on here because the rest hate the site because of all the douchebags.

1. Just because people have 1 post count and dont know all of our "inside jokes" does not mean to tell them to go to hell. Simply direct them to the Noob Guide and let them learn.

2. Neither though I dont get to ski powder often, I still think it is one of the sickest parts of freestyle skiing. What the big mountain riders do is unbelievable. Just a few weeks ago a film got booed at an awards show because it didnt have enough park skiing.

I like skiing and I like NS, I honestly think we should step up to the plate as a community of people.

So please ad more to this thread if you have ideas on things that we can change to get more skiers to join.

i know what you mean, it used to be much more community oriented. i guess i'm holding on hoping it'll return to its former glory and trying to be a quality member. i saw a great quote today at kennedy's burial site "each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." so i my bottomline is, be a good member and hopefully more will start to follow suit

Look homie, here's a couple things:

1) Your 6 months have been the bad 6 months. Summer NS is notoriously spiteful and mean.

2) I know above it's been mentioned that NS used to be more community oriented, and maybe it has, but I've been here for three years and its just as hateful as is was before.

Get this: while you may feel a sense of community, a bond here to NS and its members, its inevitable that other people will just abuse it to blow off steam. There are a FUCKTON of members - I remember when it was a big deal when we passed 100k - as far as I know we're still growing strong. There are ALWAYS going to be people who abuse their rights and say shit.

Unfortunately the only thing you can do is get used to it. Its the way it has been and will always be. There won't be any reforms because then it wouldn't be fun to post on NS anymore.

Don't try and be MLK Jr. Instead, just do your own thing, be mindful and aware and respectful and helpful to others, and hope that your actions will influence those of others.

I'll end my ramble with this: skiers aren't only skiers. The mature, respectful, older ones are the ones you like to think make up the general population of skiing and NS. However, while it is these members who stand out and make it seem like skiing acts and thinks like this, it is the teenage acne mutant spoiled brats who make up skiing...and you can't change that. While some kids call themselves skiers, remember that they're also teenagers - bitchy, whiney, bratty, dumb, teenagers.

I first thought of this last night when I was went to my cities "ski club." It was a complete joke, the club was full of mainly an older crowd who were apart of the club just for something to do. Half the members didnt ski (which no hate on em), and the other half skied but had no passion and just looked down on other skiers that were not as rich as them basically.
Then I logged on this afternoon and some kid was getting his ass torn apart because he asked a simple question in gear talk. I was just like, "man, why cant we just get along and have respect for other skiers." I have played rugby a good portion of my life and wherever I travel to play and whoever I meet, they are always respectful and will do anything for you just because you love the same thing that they do. For example, I went up to Indiana to play the number two team in the nation. They kicked our ass and both teams were fighting the whole game, but after the game they shook our hands and took us back to a raging party back at one of their houses.
So in turn I thought why cant we just respect each other in skiing the same way.

Sparknotes: I was just thinking we should have more camaraderie.

Maybe because there is already a 4 page thread on it that is clearly visible. Sometimes people just have to be smart and use google to answer there questions or the searchbar instead of making a thread for everything. If this happened people would not be getting ripped on for stupid threads.

yea but it weeds out the people that can take shit and the ones that cant. We don't baby our own in the community its sad but its true. Go onto TGR and try and claim that we are harsh, they will chew you up and spit you and your tall T out over there. NS didn't ask them to come here so you have to take shit to give shit back.

The only reason it used to be a lot more community-oriented is because for a long time, there were only a few hundred active members.

I remember when people referred to each other by their first names, and essentially knew others personally. There were no ridiculous pictures with captions, and "trolls" posted tubgirl and lemonparty, and that was it.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a tight knit community, but people on here are ruining it for both themselves and everyone else with the constant clutter and garbage posted daily.

The ones causing shit will always have the loudest voices. There is actually a ton of great information, discussion and community in our forums, the problem is that the shit talkers and trolls will always try hardest to drown that out. The best thing you can do is to be a good member. Try and respond positively to questions, participate in discussions and act like you want others to. Flaming a troll gives them the response they want, and only serves to bump their threads again and again.

As someone else mentioned the shit talking is seasonal as well, once everyone is skiing the conversations shit and NSG becomes slightly less of a cesspool.

There is no "Going back to the good old days", our community has grown well past what we had there, but theres nothing to say that these can't be good times as well.

be a good member yourself. its the least you can do, and based off this thread, you seem to be already be doing it.

if nothing else it'll at least show whoever you're helping or just being nice to that the hate and trolls doesn't represent NS as a whole and hopefully leave them with a better impression.

Of course as a newer member, the shit you see is much more obvious. With time,dumb shitty  posts will be overlooked and you will know what members are better than others. The friend list can help.

It is a good idea to be a lurker, before becoming a post contributor. NS has its culture, its sublime rules and its moments. Before posting, the rules are well written in site discussion. But informing yourself before posting will avoid you and others a lot of misery. Some are dicks because they saw the same thread over 100 times a year, and get pissy re-reading the same damn post. The crucial rule is use the searchbar intelligently.

Remember that this is the internet, its anonymous. So being a bad person online isnt being a bad person in real life.

All I can say is report bad behavior to mods, and be a good person online, like 30% of the site users.

I feel the exact same way man. I used to frequent this place a lot more, but I can't take the amount of 4chan-esque bullshit that happens on a daily basis.

However, you have to remember, as mentioned above, that it is summertime still. With the amount of people who are active on the site these days, it's easy to get those highschool kids who have nothing better to do with their lives than post bullshit all day.

Be a good example, the trolls are mostly kids trying to fit in to "the cool scene".

Oh, and be more active in cults. There's where 90% of the good information is.

Agreed, I think most people here tend to make threads just so that they can rip other people apart.

A little respect and kindness goes a long ways.
Not saying having a little fun isn't bad, but there comes time when you need to draw the line.

Like every family, NS has some dysfunctional aspects to it.  Whenever I see stuff on NS that pisses me off, I remind myself that it too is a part of the NS experience.  Sometimes the hate may get excessive, but, as everyone else has pointed out, it comes and goes.  If NS was just a big love fest all the time, people would lose interest.  If you want a love fest, join the Hare Krishnas and pass out flowers.  If you want something more legit, be prepared to flame and be flamed occasionally. 

Mods do a great job, but NSers do a great job of policing themselves too.  If someone is being a complete tool on a regular basis, they get flamed or blown off which is way worse.  Sometimes the best thing you can do is not hit reply.  For someone who is trying to stir up shit, there is nothing worse than being blown off.  That's part of learning process and there are definitely people on this site who started out as trolls but became legit members.  

Next time you get flamed, ask yourself, "Is this really hate directed at me, is it sarcasm, is someone just trying to exercise the humor clause"? Then ask yourself, "does it really fucking matter", learn from it and move on.

some of the biggest haters are also some of the most helpful and knowledgeable people on this site. they just don't put up with stupid people and wont hesitate to let them know. asian_allen is probably the best example.

I'll bet if there was some way to plot a graph that measured amount of snow on the ground, and amount of hate on NS, those two graphs would be directly inverse with each other.

Honestly, I don't think that from a hate perspective things are any different from how they were in 2002. I always remember conversations back then of "Newschoolers is going to shit" but (and as I say every year at this time) the fact is that its because people are pissed they're not skiing.

In terms of NS being less community focused... well thats a tough thing to say because there's more factors. Because the size of the site has grown so exponentially its a much larger group of people talking in the main forums.

By the numbers, in winter of 2004, Newschoolers had ~43,000 unique visitors per month. Last month, Newschoolers had ~425,000 unique visitors in one month. Thats almost ten times the number of people coming to the site!

What I would ask, is do you find yourself being more community focused in regional forums, cults and through private messaging? I know a lot of people who use the other tools on the site a lot to maintain good communication with their ski crews / ski friends.

If you find this true, then perhaps NS isn't less community focused, but has shifted positions where the community focus happens. For instance ski gabber, we do everything in our power to support the concept of this being the voice of the entire ski community. Sure its all over the place, but thats what happens when an entire sport chats in one place. :)

The micro community focus might be a group of people frequenting a cult, or posting in their active regional forum.

Maybe if you feel that NS has lost some of that community feel, do your best to jump into your regional forum or create a new cult to bring together a small group of skiers. That in my mind, is a powerful tool when you also happen to be on a site that has pretty much everyone in the ski industry checking out.

NS can be micro or it can be macro... lots of it is what you do with it. And don't for a second think the hate is out of control... you mark my words the second the snow flies en masse, this place will be one giant puppy pile of love for the sport of skiing. :)

If you don't like what he posts it's way easier to ignore skiierman rather than respond. Hell, talk to him in a PM and you realize the guy is actually a pretty normal person.

Get this I went to go take a finance exam and my calculator just powered off after the first question. That calculator lasted me three years and failed during a huge test. so I stormed out and got on NS..bad place to bring anger.

when anyone on ns refers to someone being 12, they pretty much mean "hey, you're younger than me. fuck off." Regardless of age.

its an old habit. The average age I think used to be a bit lower, but has since gone up. And now those dumb 12 year olds are those dumb 15-16 year olds.

I'd date the prom queen, you'd date the star cheerleader, I'd be the baseball captain, you'd be the football captain etc. It would make an excellent 90s sitcom which would tragically end with one of us dying in a car accident on the show. The finale would either be a funeral, or graduation.

Ratings would be incredible. Not even steve urkel would have been able to keep up.

nah it's a sitcom, but I like the way you think. Maybe a non-canon film somewhere along the line.

I don't know what we could call it. it has to be a genius name to properly reflect upon the genius of the show.
