i'm seriously considering moving to portland next year and attending school at portland state university. any feedback would be great since it would be a giant step moving away from michigan. any thoughts?

I'm from Portland and here are some pros and cons....

Pros:
-excellent public transportation
-close proximity to Mt. Hood
-tons of nice parks (including the nations largest urban park)
-extensive bicycle transportation network
-tons of outdoor activities
-lots of interesting neighborhoods

Cons:
-high cost of living (not compared to California but for someone from the midwest it is)
-rains a LOT
-insane mayor/city council
-poor jobs market
-not a ton of atmosphere compared to cities like Chicago, LA, or New York (but it depends what you're into; for me its fine)

Overall though I'd say go for it. The good definitely outweighs the bad in my opinion.

LA has atmosphere? Ummmm...ok. i would say that PDX has plenty of "atmosphere" I guess it just depends where you look.

Anyway. I moved to Portland 2 years ago from Austin(another city that is waaaay cool). Best move of my life. Not just because Hood is so close. There is just tons to do in Portland and the surrounding areas. If you're into food. WOW! so many awesome joints to chow down. The weather is mellow. It doesn't rain that much during the summer, and when it does in the winter odds are that it's snowing on the mountain.

I heard they have a pretty sweet local ski manufacturer also.

portland is awesome! i used to go there in the summer for a week and then head over to cannon beach for another, so much fun, and anythings better than michigan.....i just left the detroit area for school at uvm .best decision.ever

portland is the second best city in the northwest (next to vancouver), but it's a close second.

oregon as a state is enlightened and definitely unique. i worked in the wine business down there and only lasted a month before the pretentiousness ate away at my soul and had to retreat to the evergreen state.

anyhow, you'll probably like it but pay a visit first!

that's cool man. i'm from colorado and live in austin now. portland is definitely a place i would consider moving in the future. but, i am worried about the rain. i've lived in 2 places where it's sunny all the time. i get depressed when i don't see the sun for a couple days.

portland is hipster coffee shop fixed gear oracular spectacular capitol of the fucking world. its like a city built enitely with the funds of hundreds of thousands of ironic t-shirt wearing, fixie riding, pretentious, trust-fund baby indie band members. if you like seeing people writing poetry on their macbooks at the local cofee shop, PBR, tight pants, vans eras, wayfarers, scarves and strange facial hair adorning a populous of art school dropouts living off their parents bank accounts that INSIST they are better and more sophisticated than you, you will fucking LOVE portland.

if none of what i said above appeals to you, stay the fuck out of portland. i have been there twice, once for summertime, once to ride hood. both times i came to conclusion that i fucking hate everyone there and that there is no fucking reason to have such a large number of art gallery's and coffee shops in one place.


thats just me though, it could have totally changed in the last 2 years since i was there and suck way less now. but honestly i doubt it. the areas immediately around hood/govy camp really werent bad at all. just the actual city of portland was hell.

anyways,

If you go on the east side then yes, I guess...

You can Ski, wakeboard and have a sunset surf session all in one day if you want. There are mountain bike trails EVERYWHERE. It is a beautiful place. I love Portland. Downtown is actually really dope. A lot of cool places to check out, see and discover.

He's been to Portland twice. He has no fucking idea what he's talking about.

I would say downtown Portland is way mor laid back, and people friendly than downtown Austin. Definetely a smaller bar/club scene if your into that. Once you get out of immediate downtown area it starts feeling a lot like Austin. But a lot greener, and not as brutally hot. Summers are pretty rad. Lots of lakes, and rivers around and more of a woodsy vibe than Austin, and if you want to shred Palmer you can.

Again...rains a bunch in the winter, but the fact that there always seems to be a little fresh on the mountain more than makes up for it. I used to be the same way, and hate the rain. But it has kind of grown on me. Life doesn't stop here when it rains.

Your a skier on newschoolers so I'd say its ok for you you move here (not that anyone cares about my opinion lol). Otherwise there are a ton of people moving in, driving up prices and virtually destroying what is great about the state. For sure there are zero jobs. I lived here all my life, in the last 5-8 years the freeways, roads, drive to hood etc...have really started to suck. As far as PSU, the class sizes are pretty large, something to consider depending on the learning environment you like.

Seattle is like that, just twice as bad.

Basically, anything portland does, seattle does more of, except for strip clubs and shit.

More expensive, more hipsters, more coffee, more water, more mountains, more traffic, more liberal, more sports, more snow (not in the city itself), etc etc etc

yea i'm a little too old for 6th street at this point. i do love the variety of bars you can find in austin though. and i like the size of the city and the fact you have nice tree filled neighborhoods and cool parks and springs just outside downtown. portland seems like it has that too.

i've definitely adjusted to the heat and relative humidity so I'd probably adjust to the rain. it's certainly gotta be better than midwest or east coast weather.
