NEW CAMERA

.) I have a lot of experience with cameras (currently own Gl2, go pro hd, contour hd, flip hd)
2.) neeed a camera that has 1080i, final cut pro compatible, at least 120 fps, video recording, easy put in a bag
3.) price limit is 3,000 $
4.) Only i would use this and I would be filming terrain park
(boxes, rails, jumps, follow cams etc.)
5.) I have a computer that has 500 gigs, plus two external harddrives of 250 gigs each.
6.) works with firewire cable
7.) works with some type of waterproof case


HELP NOW PLEASE

1080i? You want 1080p, interlaced is shit

and you can barely find 1080 60p anywhere, you can get 720 60p. 120p, well, thats on a red level.

i'm sorry but when you list flip cameras to justify proficiency you are at square one. (sorry if i sound like an asshole in this post)

So you have the money to get a decent setup but i'm not convinced you have the skill set to put it to use.

I'm going to list out a few terms for you

f/stop
iso
shutter speed

these are the three most basic words that you need to understand when using a prosumer setup to get the shots because a slight cahnge in any of those means huge differences to what your image looks like. If you don't have those above concepts mastered you need to look into that before investing in a $3000 setup. Why? There is no reason to own a high caliber setup and it will make minimal difference whether you own that camera compared to another on if you are on full auto.

Where do you stand?

yeah, 1080p (or i even) wont be 120fps (unless you get a RED - but those are like $25,000), and the waterproof housing for it might be a slight issue (there are several "multi-compatible" housings, but they don't always work well to press the buttons and stuff - you usually have to press record, put it in the housing and keep it like that until you're out of the water).

correcto. 120fps does not exist in that quality at that pricerange.

You don't need 120FPS.

You most likely don't need 60fps for the majority of your shooting.

You PROBABLY should do a little research.

Those are my thoughts for now.

I'd suggest a used HVX200, you could grab one and some p2 cards for around 2500, and it would do what you really want it to do, once you read up on everything and realize you dun goof'd

Except for the fact that on full auto a camera like an XH-A1, or HMC150 will look way fucking better than a GL2.. Just sayin

I have always had a soft spot for XH-A1's. Buy one refurbished from Canon directly for 2500, shoot in auto mode, be happy with a rail edit.

Never shoot in auto. Get an HV40 if you want to do that.

Sickens me thinking about wasting a camera by shooting on auto.

I don't usually say this, but I think you need to do some reading, some research, and wait a while before you spend the money on this

Truth. Auto mode is generally better developed on handycams anyway, so shooting Auto on an HV40 will look better than shooting Auto on an XH-A1.

Also, don't buy anything expensive with tapes. HVX200 sucks ass unless you want to waste all your time fiddling with a layout that makes absolutely no sense, and haul around an extra tape deck you're never going to use...

Honestly, an HV40 + wide angle + decent tripod + slider + filters will produce MUCH better results than buying a $2000 camera by itself.

why would you need to bring around a tape deck with the HVX200? I've used that camera for years and have never once needed to use tapes with that thing. It's also a pretty easy camera to use, I've never had layout complaints; there's a reason that camera is so popular. but that being said, I wouldn't recommend getting one since they're becoming outdated, especially considering how they don't shoot in 1080p

That's just it, you don't. It's a waste of space and comprimises the durability of the camera. Just holding it you can tell that Panasonic rushed the HVX200 out of the door. The HPX170 seems to be what they were really going for in the first place.
The HVX is like the FX1 of p2 cams. :/

oh did you mean the tape deck on the camera? i thought you meant like an external tape deck as well. the hpx is pretty nice, but i actually prefer the feel of the hvx to the hpx. although the fact that the hpx has true 1080p is really nice. but i wouldn't even buy the hpx at this point, it would just be a complete waste of money.

as an aside, the hvx is way better than the fx1, i hate sony cameras. everything i've seen from that camera really has that 'video' look

what i was saying was that i would consider the hvx to be a more successful venture into the p2 world than the fx1 was in the hd tape world

I would recommend saving some of your money until you have more experience, and buy a Canon T2I instead. Its a great camera to learn how to use manual functions and shoots amazing footage if used properly. As far as high frame rates the t2i shoots 720/60p which is what most if not all prosumer camcorders will shoot right now. Panasonic has a consumer level TM700 with a 3mos sensor that will shoot 1080/60p, but overall I would recommend the t2i to start off with...

fair enough. i just happen to really like the hvx, it's always been reliable, worked well, and looked good. but i still haven't used that camera in months and don't think i'll ever really go back to it
