Door to door magazine scam

my good friend cale has recently disapeared to colorado to sell magazines door to door.

we believe that he may have gotten involed in a scam suck as this:

Really scary. A number of door-to-door frauds are being documented nationwide, so the amount of
them active in many areas might be increasing. Some people end up needing installment loans to get by until the month is over after a scam.

i only skimmed over it and am not from the US,

whats the big problem, like that they promise some kind of road trip life and they more or less hold you as slaves or whatever and/or is it illegal in general to sell that door to door?

You didnt skim very well. Its a corrupt system. The people involved sleep on dirty floors, use hard drugs, steal narcotics and things like that. Not a good time by the sounds of it.
