Do you expect new ski movies every year?

So lately i have been watching a lot of skateboardings epicly later'd series. The other night i was watching marc johnson's and he was talking about his part in fully flared and how passionate he was about putting out the best segment possible.
He was saying how he missed 4 out of his sons 7 birthdays because he was filming. And when the movie premiered and he saw his part he cried because he knew he gave it every thing he had.


when you watch that clip, every single shot is an absolute banger.
There are lots of differences just between the riding in skateboarding and skiing and the sheer number of trick combinations and places to skate in skateboarding. But do you think skiing will ever have parts like this? Where watching it gives you chills?
Level 1 and poorboyz i think need to put out movies every year because they are film companies and that is how they make money. Whereas these movies are sponsored by companies themselves and take years to make. Lot's of it is kept secret to build up anticipation.
I don't think i have ever been HYPED going into a ski movie and hyped leaving. You walk in expecting a lot, and lots of times during the movie i am kind of just staring at the screen watching what seems to be the same thing over and over again. Or i already have an idea of what is going to happen. Sammy's triple for example.
Marc's segment he gave it every thing he had. He sacraficed a lot to put together a segment like that. Years and years of footage, injuries etc. Not like some skiing movies where its, here is my 2 minute segment. It was shot in 2 days at snowpark and 1 night at the x-games.
Maybe there is a ski movie with years of footage that i am not aware of.
Not really sure where i am going with this just curious to what you guys think. Maybe you guys think ski movies are fine the way they are.

I mean I think part of it has to do with the sheer technicality required from skateboarding.

Not only that but skateboarding is certainly older than freestyle skiing and has had more time to stew.

This is not to say that skiing does not have certain tricks that require an equal level of devotion, but most edits are not presented with shot after shot of incredible feats of skill.

I think something like Oskari Raitainen's 2010 edit and Nick Martini's NZ snowpark edit from this summer are definitely the product of a lot of hard work. (Even though nick's was probably shot in the course of a few hours)

here's one of the things.. in skiing team videos arent as prevalent and pbp etc dont have the funding (considering how much more expensive it is to make a ski movie (usually)) to be having 2 year projects and stuff.

i also think its worth noting that skiing is young enough still that every year shows a LOT of progress

Ya technicality is pretty much what sets the standard. And the progression in skiing especially. Say tom for example spent 2 years making his edit. His shit from 2 years ago would look old and dated mixed in with his new stuff.
I'm just more looking at the passion side. I kind of picture pollard doing something like this and one year just have an absolute bangin seggy.

dont agree at all about getting hyped by a ski movie. When i walk out I am usually super pumped. I feel like this is because skiing is so young and every year shit just gets better and better.

Stuff like this is starting like seth is making a movie over the course of 2 years now.
Give it some time and maybe we will see a ski movie made over the course of 5 years.

Skateboarding is cheap and for a ski company to not put out a film for two years would just not be possible right now.

yeah dont really get that. I feel like you can film skateboarding almost 365 days a year. You would think he could make it to his kids birthdays. Especially if he spent years on the segment.

Well yo look at "thats it thats all that" movie full blown gave me chills watching that last scene and its movies like thats it thats all that change the way people look at ski movies. I fully agree with you man when i first watched Marc Johnson's part my head almost exploded including guy mariano's part just absolute gold. Movie's like that are so god damn sweet and i would much rather see a movie that can move mountains its so sick every 2 years then some pro's throwing down like they do every year but whatever thats my 2 cents. I personally think that matchstick should take it upon themselves to take sometime to drop an epic movie mainly because those guys actually understand how to please the eye not just have such a star studded cast that people can't look away from.

i always wondered why skiing puts out movies every year, i suppose it's cause of skiing being seasonal. Rollerblade videos don't come out often.

It's not cheap by any means. They travel the world all the time to hit different spots. Skateboarding is now at a point where the stuff doesn't change every year, it has reached a point where there is not as much progression and more people doing more technical tricks on bigger stuff. All the tricks have already been done so something marc johnson shot in 2005 is still really good today. If you looked at what pros in skiing were doing 5 years ago it would be really boring to watch now.

I've thought about this before too. I don't think it would work so well in skiing cause skiing progresses so fast. If a movie was filmed over 2 years or more, a good chunk of the tricks would seem outdated and easy or "uncool" At least for the moment, skiing is moving fast enough that banger movies can come out every year.

I wish production companies would agree on rotating years they released films. Like if half the companies released every odd year and the other half would release every even year.

I think this would save everyone a little money each year ahah.

Skiing is still progressing too fast to do this.

However I think the time for multi year projects is coming soon.

First of all, pretty recently (maybe since about 2007) we have begun to see much more creative stuff in movies. I think this is where skateboard films are really still the best.

Also freeskiing has money now. Ski companies can afford to, and will, sponsor big team movies.

I think stuff like urban, BC booters and lines could be shot over 2 years to give a movie more variety. The only aspect of movies which you could not really use year old footage would be like park jump shoots.

did it ever occur to you that maybe some skiers don't suck so bad that they need 5 years to produce a banger segment? i mean that was a tight video but to miss that many birthdays of his son... dude's got some fucked up priorities.

I see your point, but I think skiing is progressing too quickly and companies run the risk of having their older footage look like well.....old footage This is starting to happen here and there in skiing (and snowboarding). JP filmed for 2 seasons for his seg in Revolver and didn't Travis Rice film for 2 years for That's It That's All?

that's stupid to compare because why don't you take pep's one season of 1242 shit and compare it to skiing even 3 years ahead. even today's shit doesn't compare.

actually, your exception proves the rule. 90% of ski footage isn't timeless like pep's 1242 segment; if you don't show it that year it will be stale the next.

untrue. I have been purchasing ski movies every year since 2001 and i still watch the old movies on a regular basis. Watch sterotype and tell me its boring, or red tape, or the game, or blizzard of ahh's

Pep's 1242 segment, as influential as it was, would look outdated in a ski movie today. From his equipment (which people DO look at in ski movies) to the tricks he is doing, to the filming.

The reason his segment is so important though is it kind of changed the way people thought about film segments. Only like 3 years after that segment did we start seeing that kind of thing again. It started to become less of a "filmed slopestyle contest" and more of a "holy shit, I never thought about doing that"

A lot of what drives production companies to put out a movie each year is through product endorsement. Every fall, kids see what pros where in the movies and say "I want to buy that." So they do. Because new product lines come out before the season every fall, they need constant media outlets to promote that. If a pro filmed a segment for two years, the clothing and skis he wore in the first season of filming would be outdated by the time the film came out.

i don't really get how you don't really get that. when i was growing up my dad missed a few of my birthdays because of business trips and shit like that, how is this any different? marc gets paid to skateboard, its his career. it's not like he was fucking around with his friends on trips, all of the lakai riders talked about how much of a hard-ass the director ty evans was during the making of this video. it was skate all day, when it got dark he brought out the lights and generators, go to bed late and wake up at 8am to do it all over again. thats why marc got so stressed about his part which was why he cried about it. its his passion and he put everything he had into it. i'm sure he cried when his sons were born too. sorry for the rant, but implying that he's a bad father because he didn't make it to his son's birthdays (when he's out providing for his family) is fucked up.
