Hey guys, I was hoping I could get some help here. Friend plugged in a harddrive to the power supply when the computer was on...fans were still running but the monitor lost signal. The power button on the front of the case wouldn't shut it off so he flipped the switch on the back. Can't reboot the computer

Everything put in to its original configuration. The motherboard has a green light (normal) that stays lit. PSU has an amber light (not normal). Also, the power button on the front of the case won't work. Did the case maybe get shorted or is PSU fried? Any help on this would be great.  Really hoping the motherboard isn't shorted.

how far through the boot process does it go? Does it beep at all when you turn the power on? If it only beeps once, you may have to flash your CMOS. Look up your motherboard, and it will have instructions on how to do it. It is usually a jumper on the board you have to move into the other position for 10 seconds, then move back and that reloads the CMOS into the boot sector. Sometimes works depending on the problem.

Describe exactly what happens when you push the power button.

Nothing, it isn't even going into POST.  The PSU usually has a red or green LED, which is now amber in color.  The motherboard has a green LED that is on, though I believe that is always on when it has 5v of power so if the PSU was messed up it could still be on...

The connector the HDD was plugged into was one that was in the following configuration:

PSU -> Case Controls -> 4-pin Connector

So the 4-pin connector came after the case controls.  The case controls no longer have a lit LED, which is not normal.

In summary, case controls LED not lit up, PSU has unusual colored LED, power button does nothing and triggers no POST.

Hmmm... Got a spare power supply you can throw in and give a try? Not really sure, it could be a ton of different things.

I'm hoping it is either the case or the PSU.  If it is the motherboard I will be seriously pissed.  Thinking logically though, the computer was never unplugged from the wall meaning that the entire system was fully grounded.  I can't imagine plugging a peripheral in to the PSU chain would have damaged the motherboard especially since it was at the end of the line after the case controls.  I am thinking that it shorted the case and possibly fried the PSU.  Those would obviously be the two easiest to fix rather than replacing the whole motherboard/cpu all that shit.

Don't have a spare PSU.  Will probably take it into a shop tomorrow.

Try another power supply then you can bump.

hold Fn + power button to run diagnostics test. Choose boot options and make sure everything is booting correct order (see manual), and remember to plug everything in correctly.

I do need to test another power supply.  I unfortunately do not have one at my disposal for the moment.

To the people asking about beeps...the power button does nothing, so I can't even get to POST and see if there are any beeps at all.  I will try and short out the power connectors on the MB tonight when I get home and see if that will start it or not.  Should tell me if it is the case switch or the MB/PSU.

yea, you're gonna have to find someone with some extra parts lend you.

if it's not posting it's hardware, finding out which part is your next mission...

recently i fried my cmos on my motherboard by accidentally putting the power led on it... yeaaaa don't do that

new gigabyte board though, never getting any other brand.
