Tilt-shift lens

while watching eye trip last night, i noticed that Level 1 used tilt-shift several times during the movie and i absolutely love the look it gives to the shot.
But since i really don't know shit about tilt-shift lenses, i thought i'd ask NS.

Canon's starts at 1300$ (which is kinda expensive), but i found this on ebay for about 300$

I know that you shouldn't cheap on lenses, but i would really like to try tilt-shift, and this lens looks pretty fun to start with.
Thoughts on this lens, and tilt-shift in general?

Yeah, if you're going to do it at least make the photo benefit from the effect. 99% of the post tilts I've seen do absolutely nothing for the photo except make it look absolutely contrived and unbelievably tacky. Just because it looks neat at first doesn't mean you didn't ruin the photo (you guys are totally welcome to take offense to this).

I use tilts all the time when I'm shooting 4x5 portraits, but it is always to emphasize something I feel is important in the photo. I don't do it to make my photos look like hobby store models, I use it to bring the viewer into the the photo. I could rant on and on about all the shitty, poorly-executed PS filters there are now, but I'll just end it here for the time being.

Maybe I'm just pissy today.

...I suppose I'll continue being bitter. Pretty much everything in that article was wrong. Tilt/shift comes from view cameras, and the movements were used to control perspective and focal plane. This equated to perspective corrections in architecture and landscapes, and the ability to have an infinite depth of field with a front tilt (no, f/22 on your DSLR does not do this). Of course, that is a more traditional view, and a lot of people (including myself) abuse the movements at times. However, saying that focal plane control was created to make things look like toy models is absolutely wrong. Like, you could not conceivably be more wrong.

haha just fooling around with it. Once I get some shots from an aerial perspective i might try it out again
