Hey newschoolers,
My 6th grade math teacher's son Michael R. Gebhardt died in an avalanche in Colorado in 2005 and a memorial fund was started in his name. The program BASE, is in the running for $50,000 from PepsiCo to provide avalanche/backcountry safety education, and is currently in 149th place, so please, we need your votes...

BASE - Backcountry Avalanche Safety Education is a project that
targets those who enjoy the outdoors and would provide education and
training for them before venturing into the backcountry. Its aim is to
reach as many people as possible in simple, effective ways. Many who
pursue this are young and do not always have the finances for equipment
or training. This project will provide free avalanche/backcountry
equipment and safety education clinics, as well as free CPR/first aid
classes. In addition, educational material would be distributed
in targeted areas through bookmarks, coasters and placemats at local
eateries and placards on the local area bus routes. Equipment purchased
would be distributed to participants, ski areas and Search and
Rescue for educational and training purposes.
