In search of a dog

I right now currently am in search for a dog , and i need a little help on betting more infro on breeds and help with choosing a dog . here are the categories of dogs that i want .

- Medium to large sized . no bigger than a pitbull .
- tough dog . a dog that is not weak , and can handle being roughed around .
- looks tough . i want a dog that when people see it , they will be scared of it .
- Active . i want a dog that is pretty active around the house , and likes to have fun but at the same time will be calm , collective , and will lay down with you and likes to be pet .
- can take cold weather . winters get pretty cold in CT so walking the dog in the morning woulnt be a problem .

also , if you have a dog , post a picture of it for fun so we can see how it looks and describe the dog a little .

You don't want a rottweiler. Those things can be extremely bad-behaved pets.


I would recommend a German Sheppherd. Great dogs, extremely obedient to its family, and can put a mean bite on someone if they are not welcome. You just know how to train em.

i wouldnt get a dog with long hair, it just gets everywhere and is so annoying to clean up. right now i have 2 hungarian viszlas. not the toughest dog, but love being outside and are extremely effectionate and active. also, i love rotweillers. my friend grabbed 2 from a shelter and they are the sweetest dogs.

Just go to the SPCA and get the coolest fucking dog there. A. it's cheap, and B. you're rescuing a dog, and not paying for one that was most likely raised in a shit heap just so they could sell it. I find it very hard to put a price on a living animal (dead, well, i'll pay for that...).

not a dog fighter . just my family wants a manly dog . and i live in a duplex . not too big but enough for the dogs to feel comfortable in . and our entire basement is pretty big so he would have all that to himself .

Unless your breeding, mutts are usually a better choice. They are more well behaved and smarter, generally speaking.

I would recommend a springer spaniel, or a field spaniel. Sort of a medium to large size, and even though the don't look mean my springer is fierce. Supper well behaved dogs, and my springer can pull me a long time on my longboard no problem

dont get a shiba inu worst dog ever all they do is bark and act like cats if you want a husky you better be willing to devote alot of time into training it they could be the best dog ever if trained right or a really bad dog just get a rescued golden retriever best dog ever

shiba inus are cool and all, but they are pretty small.

The Akita Inu looks pretty much identical but it is a bit bigger... closer to your rotweiler dog.

Anyway, it's my dream dog. I want a red one... Only thing is that they are hard to train cause they get bored and they are super protective of their owners but don't really bark that much.

This, I love golden's all around the greatest dog out there. They want to do nothing more than to please you, they're awesome to play with, and they like to run around, but can still be chill when you need them to be. I live in CT and I had one, so there's no problem there. They're aren't the scariest looking dogs (in fact quite the opposite) but they are very territorial by nature so they'll still be protective.

labs are exactly what you described behavior wise, they just aren't tough or scary looking. it's something you'll realize you don't need after a little while. my timid little submissive lab is the greatest dog i can imagine. she's super fun to play with and chills when you need her to. perfectly behaved along with all the other labs i know

alaskan malamutes are the best! if you are looking for anything biger go with part malamute part wolf!my family had one and she was the best!i also hear that malamute and huskys mixed with a german shepherd are really good! i would say to go with a mix but that is just me and what i like!

Huskies/malamutes are awesome but they require tons of exercise and probably won't be happy unless they're outside almost all the time.

Check out english style labs. They're more beefy than American style labs. Much bigger bodies, barrel chested, big blocky heads. Very cool looking dogs.

Sigsbee was 5 months old in these pictures. He was born on St Patrick's day 2010. He's an awesome dog, very smart.

if you want a well behaved dog dont get any of the ones you were considering. also do not get a husky or a beagle. all of those are usually terribly behaved. My personal favourites are golden retrievers if you get a good one because some are dicks. german shephards if you get them trained they are extremely loyal and well behaved. black labs because they arre really nice and loyal/well behaved if trained but also very playful they like to swim and chase sticks and stuff. if you have any questions about dogs feel free to PM me or ask them here ill keep an eye on the thread. (i work in a dog kennel, have lived around dogs my entire life and both my parents are good dog trainers.) and if you want a massive dog get a brazilian mastiff. make sure to get a nice one though

ridgebacks are great dogs but extremely expensive and hard to come buy. honestly check out a shelter first before dropping your money on a purebred. i found my dog (purebred American Stafforshire Terrier) at my humane society and literally got him FOR FREE. you can find tons of great dogs there too AND they're even healthier than purebreds :)









oh and ps: if you're getting a dog just because it looks mean, you're getting a dog for all the wrong reasons. trust me it's VERY VERY hard being a APBT owner because people refuse to come near your dog.

plus if you get a shelter dog you can tell all the other people you see with dogs that yours is a shelter dog and you saved it from imminent painful death

having a shelter dog is like owning a hybrid; nobody asked you to talk about it but that is definitely not gonna stop you

but obviously i have nothing against shelter dogs, i think it's great that people get them and we looked before getting our dainty little purebred but the shelter didn't really have anything young enough

I'd recommend a Shiba Inu, my friend has one and they can be very lovely. They do have a very big hunting instinct, so if you won't manage to weed it out as it grows up, it's gonna run away after a goose or whatever, and if you're unlucky, won't come back. Otherwise, very obedient and caring dogs.
