Midwest Racing Scene

OK before you bash me about starting another racing thread read what I have to say. Also, if you think racing is gay then simply don't reply!

Ok I've been skiing for 11 years now. I have never raced before but I still believe I am one of the better skiers in the midwest. Is anyone think it would be possible for me to start next year at the age of 16? I just want to become a better skier. Does anyone think I will be able to compete? Finally, how the best way to start, do a clinic, join a team? Thanks for the help all you cool racers!

it may be a little difficult to start racing now, but by no means impossible.

Your best bet would be to try and get a hold of anyone who is involved with any of the clubs in your area...i can't really say what they can do for you because the U.S ski program is structured differently than Canada's.

join like the local race team...to be one of or the best...thats nearly impossible...you kinda have to grow up doing it...but who knows...it could happen.

Its unrealistic to think I will become the best but I have seen a few local races and the skiing quality is so low compared to the rest of the USA. I think I could beat most of them, but of course I have never tried it myself other than a few NASTARS. So join a club and find some people too race, thanks everyone!

i started last year at age 15, i trained hard everyday and i thought i would never be able to catch up to the top guys, but this year i managed to do it, although i did racing camps a couple years ago, i say go for it, maybe just do a year of rec racing, (local races) then go to FIS races, thats were all the racers your age. Its a lot of fun and your skiing improves so much. I was thinking the same thing as youlast year, what if i could never catch up? what if i will be last every race? but i managed to catch up to all the kids who have years of racing experiance, and now i am competative against other FIS racers my age

Andy i know of a couple racers that started racing in there teens and managed to make it big, and get to world cup races, Damion Applegath didn't start racing untill he was 14 and he made it the world cup. ( he doesn't compete anymore and is my coach)

Thanks man, I will give a try, even if I finish dead last who cares. My main goal is just to become a better skier and to enjoy competetion. Knowing that you can start late makes racing seem just that more appealing.

You should definitely race, your skiing improves dramatically. I'm from the midwest too, I went out west and didnt have any problem skiing deep or steep. If you do race, don't join nastar, its for old fat guys. Make sure you do slalom its way funner. And make sure theres hot chicks with gs suits (tight booty suits), youll be very glad.

do downhill, i did my first downhill this year at apex this year, it was so sweet, they had a jump set on the course, and you would go of it at 130km, it was so crazy. I can't wait im going to do the NORAM downhill at lake louise next year, its on the same course as the world cup there.

Sorry downhill wont happen in the midwest, the average vertical is probally around 200ft!

Actually Ski Bum there are a couple of downhills every year in the midwest. Boyne has one every year.

you could definetly start at 16, thats around when I did. Trust me, there are a lot of good racer out there though that could probably whup you in the midwest, so don't go out thinking you are going to win (just a warning, no offense) I race at tyrol basin in southern wi

I don't think I automatically going to win, its just I've lived all the country and been skiing for 11 years, i think I might be able to actually compete in the midwest and be somewhere in the pack, instead of last...Downhill at boyne, that must be super short and/or super flat, oh well!

racing is all about having fun.. I was into racing big time and quit last summer. I was really burnt out on it cuase i moved out east to go to ski acadmey. Worked my ass off and make the Devo. team for the U.S Ski Team... Racing is tuff if you want to be the best at it.. like I said just have fun with it.
