Emailing professors that I'm too sick for class

First semester in college and I actually feel like death today. Just wondering what I should say in the email to my professors to tell them that I'm sick without making it look like total BS- because I actually am sick...

i never email, i feel like most professors dont really care. no matter what you say, theyre gonna assume its BS if you dont go to the doctor and get a doctors note.

just stay home and if it was a required class you can e-mail your professor/assistent or student counselor if you should look into following it another time, or if its enough if you look into other student's notes....

my college is pretty strict on attendance so were only able to miss the equivalent of a week unless we are athletes with notes for away games.

Some do. There are classes that you really don't want to miss, but when you have to you have to.

It really depends on the class. If you have 300 people in the lecture, then I wouldn't waste my time. If you go to a small private school, and have 14 people in your class, then I would go ahead and send the email.

Regardless of whether or not your teacher thinks it is BS, it shows that you A) didn't just oversleep and B) might actually give a shit.

Unless your class is >40ish students, you should definitely email. If you have a lecture thats 100-200 people, dont worry.

if you live on the campus goto the campus nurse and get some type of note so it looks legit that you are sick and send an email saying whats happening and ask what you are missing and such

just say "sorry i cant make it to class today, is there time when we could meet up and you could briefly fill me in on what i missed"

then just hit him up during his office hours, get that work and shit.

just don't ask the professor "what did i miss in class?" they will hate you,


one of my teachers fails us if we miss 3 classes or more, fucking ridiculous, and he has been late to class 4 out of the 5 classes we have had already

thats the standard rule at Norwich, where i go to school.

miss 3 classes, receive warning saying you may fail if you miss any more unless there is a logical reason such as major illness.

Get notes from someone else, asap. If they dont make sense, go to his office hours. If he has office hours today or tomorrow, go as soon as you possibly can. Even though you are sick.

Send an email stating, that you are sorry for missing class today and will contact other students about notes as soon as possible, if there is anything that doesn't make senses you will go to office hours to make sense of it.


I've had classes where the professor said as low as 2 classes before. The sooner you go to office hours and get to know the professor and really act like you are learning the information, you can generally get away with more. I know that sounds bad... but I was busy in college.... usually too busy for classes....

i think that's pretty standard protocol for a lot of colleges. i know it was at the schools that I went to. now whether or not the teachers actually enforce that policy, well that's another story. I've found that the more that you appear to actually give a shit, the more lenient they are...

and i wouldnt worry. as long as this doesnt become a frequent occurrence, and your professor doesnt suck, they should be pretty understanding.
