I just finished reading Into the Wild after seeing a recommendation for it on another thread. I have so much respect for Christopher McCandless you don't even know. He taught me that life is too short to sit on the sidelines, you have to go out and get what you want. For him, it was to live in the wild on the Stampede Trail in Alaska but for a normal person it can be anything. I know a lot of NS'ers have read the book and have shown their love for it in countless threads. But now NS'ers, I ask you, what is it that you dream of doing?

yeah that dream sure turned out well for him!

jokes, i have serious respect for him, he lived his dream, but it's kinda sad that he figured out 'happiness is best when shared' and then died alone

my favorite book of all time, very inspriring. As for me, I just want to be happy with whatever it is I do in life, which would be something to do outside. Hiking the Appalacian Trail is a very big dream of mine.

Read 'A Walk in the Woods'
If you want to hike the Appalachian Trail, and you liked 'Into the Wild', you will fucking love this book.

Great book. For those who haven't read it, don't eat wild potatoes...they'll get ya.

That being said, I'd love to burn all my money and ski the mountains my whole life. Unfortunatly gear breaks and you'll need to buy new stuff eventually.

Watched the movie in school so I went home and bought the book. By far one of the best stories I've ever read.

yeah he was a fucken legend, love the book and the movie, emile hirsch played a good part, looked so similar in that photo. i just dont like how he didnt get in contact with his sister before he died.

He didn't really eat poisonous berries, that's just Hollywood making a great story "more interesting". I don't see why they changed some parts from what is at least believed to be true. The autopsy found he died of hunger, there was no trace of poison in his body

i read the book and watched the movie and did a compare contrast thing for my lit film class
he confuses one plant with a wild potato seeds or something similar, and then begins to feel weak. then he looks in the book and notices that the stuff he thought it was is almost identical to what he actually ate, which is a plant that causes starvation. The starvation can be overcome with enough water and time, but he was already so weak, so he died of starvation. It showed this in the movie and book. Everything starts going fast in the movie and then he reads and it does a cloeup on some of the words like starvation and stuff

i'm going to get karma raped for this but it was an okay book and he shouldn't be inspiration for anyone. He didn't live the dream, he died young because of his own mistakes. Anyone can just give up, throw away all their shit and wander into the woods and die. Your inspiration should be people who are actually living the dream, doing what they want and doing it smartly and successfully.
