ahh your are my worst nightmare, i lost my ipod at the ski basin a while back, luckily someone found it and gave it back to me, but i was terrified someone like you would come along.... not that you really can do anything anyway, it was sheer luck i got mine back... you cant trade it in though without the papers and shitties i don tthink

If it had a name on it, I'd be looking for it's owner. Like if it was ingraved or something........ But it's got to have been sitting outside for at LEAST 2 months. I figure it was dropped in powder, which probably means almost 3 months ouside.

I think apple has a fairly good repair plan... you might not get the warranty benefits, but you should at least take it into an apple store and try to get them to repair it. Might not cost too much...
