Macbook problem

I started my macbook, it froze and shut down. Now when I turn it the only thing on the screen is a folder with a question mark on it. did the computer die? what does this mean?

happened to me once. Let it sit off for a while, remove the battery, then try restarting it.

Is it a 2007 by any chance? Mine did the same thing and I had to get a new hard drive and lost everything.

There may still be hope.


Reboot holding down the Apple and "s" key to reboot in single user mode.

Once a bunch of text loads, type fsck -fy Now press return.
A ton of stuff shows up and it repairs what it can.
Type reboot and it should reboot. If it doesnt, just hold down the power key till it restarts.

ok, unplug the hard drive, then plug it back in (unplug both power and data). it MAY have come loose...maybe.

but yeah sounds like a hard drive issue. you may have lost ALL you data/files on the computer...good thing you kept steady backups...right?? :P


PCs and Apple computers have almost identical hardware issues, although I will say mac laptops are generally built much better.
