Where were you on 9/11/01?

i don't want any conspiracy bullshit or anything like that, this is neither the time nor place to discuss it.

9/11 effected the people more than anything, and being that we, ns'ers, are people...i think it's more interesting to see where we were, how old we were, what we were doing etc etc. NS is in general a younger crowd, and i think the younger generation is left out when discussing 9/11. All i read about is how everyone was at work and so on...

So NS, where were you on 9/11/01?

I'll start. I was in 6th grade, and it was a beautiful day out. From my bus stop that morning, i could see planes leaving Boston, and i watched them gracefully flying off into the distance, completely unaware. The school day was completely normal, except for the fact that there were more police around, and we weren't allowed outside for recess. They didn't tell us anything, which in retrospect, i can somewhat understand.

When i got home, i ran off the bus, and my mother met me outside and asked if i knew what had happened. I then watched cnn replay the events of the day for hours. And that night i remember watching George bush address the nation, and specifically my father stated that "you'll remember this forever. This is going to be your pearl harbor."

and he was right.

i was walking from my 1st period class from A corridor to B corridor to my 2nd period class, and i remember over hearing someone on the hallway talking about it, i was in 6th grade, and then there was a bomb threat at my middle school, i live 15 miles from the city in NJ

Got home from maybe first grade? and saw it on cnn multiple times. Terrible day. I remember everyone just being quiet and sad.

Going to Jazz Band practice at 7:30 in the morning during 8th grade year and hearing it on the radio and looking at my dad and going "Didn't this happen in like the 90s some dude trying to blow them up? Why are they talking about it now?"

And then sitting during Jazz Band practice watching the news.

i was in my 3rd grade class.
my teacher had all of us sit down on the carpet in the corner, and told us that a plane had crashed into a building in NYC, and that it will probably be on a lot of channels when we get home so we shouldn't watch it because it was bad or something. I then went home and my mom dad and grandparent were all watching tv nervously because my aunt is a NYC cop who was on duty in the city, and luckily she abandoned her cruiser(police suv actually) before the second tower fell only a few block away and ran luckily.
she saved the boots she was wearing that day and they still have the dust from the towers, and she has breathing problems, and lots of coughing because of all the dust and stuff.

its a time when you will always remember where you were

i guess this thread is also a subtle way to see the age gaps on ns.

people on here who were barely in elementary school, and others who were already on their way in the real world. Really interesting to see.

5th grade, upstate NY. My teacher, it was her first year teaching, and she lived in NYC her whole life. Her family worked in the WTC. That day, they didn't go into work, one because he was late, the other was sick. My dad had just declined a job to the WTC about a month before. The kids in my class weren't told what happened, but one kid managed to go in the teachers lounge or something, and saw it. The secretary at the school, her brother was the guy that managed basically to bring down the plane in PA (he fought the terrorist so it didn't go where it was supposed to).

i was in 8th grade and we had "shared time" over at the public school. i remember gettingon the bus and the driver saying "someone just did a horrible thing to your people"....still dont know what she meant. then went back to my school, you could tell by the teachers something just wasnt right. i was expecting something horrible but on a much more local scale then i got picked up by my mom, on the drive home all the gas stations were PACKED...went home mom gave me the news, watched the news for a long long while, had a hard time falling asleep that night and then i had a really shitty dream

8th grade, sleeping on couch after watching empire strikes back. mom wakes me up yelling "two planes collided in the air then hit one of the trade center buildings"
deliriously made bowl of cinnamon toast crunch, then watched news for like 2 days straight.

I probably would have been in 1st grade... Honestly don't remember much of it, although I think I did see some footage on CNN... I would have been like 6 at the time so I was too young to really know what was going on.

I was in 4th grade, getting up for school, and I saw my parents watching it on TV. Everyone at school was completely confused, because we knew what had happened, but we couldn't comprehend why it had happened because of our age...

6 years old, watching tv and saw it happen on tv and said to my mom "a plane just crashed into a building!" and she thought i was watching cartoons er something and then i said "look! another plane crashed!" and then she came over and saw and yeah it was pretty sick.

Third grade. After lunch, they told us we were "practicing" an indoor recess.  Then when i got home my brother asked me if i knew what was going on and filled me in. Then i watched depressing footage on the news with my family for a while.

how old were you at the time?

for a lot of people it was a scary thing. Most watched it live, and we had no idea what was going on anywhere. We didn't know if it was a full blown invasion coming or just a freak accident

i remember brushing my teeth in the bathroom with my dad and having my mom call. turned on the tv and there it was. i dont remember much since i was only 6 but i remember everybody being kind of sad all day and listening to npr in the car on the way to school... at school we all went out into the field and held hands in a circle (it was a waldorf school. worthless education but whatever) and they rang the big bell or something like that... i just remember everybody being really sad

Freshman german class. I remember one of the other foreign language teachers came into the room and talked to my teacher, and then he went and turned the TV on and we watched it until the bell for next period. I think after that not many teachers turned on the TV, but my memory is kind of fuzzy at the moment.

elementary school, substitute teacher told us 'some planes crashed' and thats it

later my mom picked me up and told me what had happened and i couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the towers had actually fallen down

third grade, I didn't hear about it until I got home, but I was picked up from school which was unusual. When I got home I watched the news for a couple of hours, and my mom got back from a meeting where her friend told her "the world was never going to be the same after what just happened" when they heard about it.

i was in freshman year of high school. it was a boarding school (went there for 1 year) and we didnt really have access to TV and all. over breakfast one of the teachers got up and said that a plane had hit a building in new york. I rememeber they wheeled in a tv after class for this one and only occasion and we were all glued to it watching what happened. absolutely insane.


PS i left boarding school to go to a normal high school the next year

i was in second grade sitting in school. got home and found out about it watched the replays. i was too young to comprehend what was happening and how bad it really was. my teacher asked everyone to draw a picture of what they saw on the news.

2nd grade. it was a shortened day with a class party, so i was obviously pumped. my mom ran the partys in my class, and she let me just come in with her instead of going to school on time. right when i got there everyone was gathered around a radio listening. they told me what was going on, it really freaked me out. my teacher was worried because her husband had flown out that day. i remember my mom gave me some veggie tails stuffed animal thing, i held onto it so tight haha

5th Grade... We had gone to see a Shakesphere play for school and I remember a lady in the gift shop was listening to something on the radio but I didn't pay much attention to it.  Then when we got back to school they brought us all into the gym and sat us down.  They told us about what had happened and just wanted us to know before we went home.  I remember we were all so angry when we left class that day.  Then I walked home and watched the news for hours and fell asleep listening to it on the radio.  I will always remember that day.

I was in 5th grade, left school rite as it all started. I thought it was the coolest shit. Like a real life comic book, until i seen my mom crying when she picked me up. I watched the 2nd tower fall live. Then sat on the front porch as the street jamed in a line to the gas station just down the road.

on sept 10 i remember reading something about the twin towers and being 9 years old the next day when i woke up before school i saw my parents watching the tv i said "i know what those are". we all watched in disbelief and i went off to school grade 3 or 4 and the entire school was in the library/classrooms or gym watching the tv all day. It was so fucked up

i was in my 3rd grade class. my mom took me out before the teacher said anything about it because i have family who lived right across the street from the world trade centers. i just remember going to my grandparents house and sitting on the floor watching.

5th grade. pretty sure we werent sent home early because the middle school and high schools were (they were located on a base, so it was a safety precaution)

had no idea why we were sent home until i got home and my brother was watching tv. thought he was watching a movie at first but it kept repeating so i slowly realized it was real life and was pretty scared.

4th grade, they told us it was too hot to go outside. every emergency vehicle in my town went there.

There were ashes on my doorstep a few hours after it happened, a fine black lining over white granite. AT that point I was still unaware what had happened.
