Bike Building Help

Hey. this is to all mountain bikers.

i have a specialized hard rock from about 3 years back and i want to convert it to a dirt jumper.

its a hard tail. id have to buy a Single Sprocket for 1 gears.

new rear brake.

new tires and front shocks.

my question is would it be cheaper to buy a brand new dirt jumper from a shop or is doing this cheaper??

+K for help.

i could also you tips on what to buy and others.

depends on what parts and how nice. having a bike that is meant to take the abuse is probably better than just converting an old xc hardtail though... im gonna leave it to the parts/repairs/etc. ninjas to recommend parts

buy a real DJ bike, what you got is not built for it (heavy, not very slack). shouldn't be hard to find something good and complete for the $500 range used, under a grand new no problem. definitely your best option.

i'd probably just buy a new one than try to pour money into trying to convert a bike into something it's really not intended for. cost wise, it will probably wind up being really similar if you get an average priced bike.

Yeah for sure buy a DJ.  Entry level bikes like a hardrock go for way more than theyre worth on craigslist (at least around me) and DJs are pretty easy to find for cheap.
