Mammoth Thanksgiving

Since flights to the east coast are are outrageous for the holiday I was thinking of getting a bunch of my friends together and renting something up there. Make a turkey and go skiing. Maybe a little football on the tv.

Anyone have suggestions of the best places to stay location wise? I've never been to Mammoth. We are looking for a house or condo, near bars, perhaps maybe a little shopping (grocery store for the bird and beer). Something for 6-10 people.

How is it up there during Thanksgiving anyway?

Any advice, pointers, suggestions much appreciated.

it's not too expensive to rent condos with that many people for a couple days, just look around. You'll have a pretty good time, probably

yep, generally with a few features, and sometimes if it's an early season some decent snow.

Yes.  I skied a couple of feet of pow last Thanksgiving. 

There are plenty of condos available.  The shuttle should be running by then, so you can usually get to the mountain(or the village bars) without driving.  I have a ski lease up there, so I go 2-3 weekends a month.  We usually use the shuttle to get to the mountain, it is really nice and convenient.  Search for some real estate places, and make sure to ask them if the condo in question is on the shuttle loop.  Make sure to find a condo on the loop, as you can get to Vons for groceries that way. 

There is also an evening shuttle( they call it the trolley) to the village bars.  I think it comes every half hour, with the last one leaving the village at one.  I don't usually go out when I'm up there, as I'm there to ski, but it does help if you want to party.

Have fun.  You really don't know what conditions will be like, but last year sure was  nice.

I would check out the Sherwin Villas.  They are pretty centrally located, and reasonably priced.  They are right on the shuttle loop.

You have to decide if you want to be more in town or by the village.  I lived in Mammoth Estates last season and they were only about three blocks from the village and did not seem too expense.  Here is the website. http://www.mammothestates.com/mammoth_lakes_condo_rates.html

it's dope during thanksgiving, not sure if all the buses are running though so you might want to stay near main street to make it easy

ya theres a little place there where you can grab a gondola and take that straight to canyon lodge. stores for booze and turkey and movie theaters and all that are a little further off but its not that bad of a walk at all. never been during thanksgiving but i hear its pretty decent by then

Thanks ya'll! Yeah I'm really just looking to get friends together, make a turkey all while enjoying the fact I'm in wonderful Mammoth, and *cross fingers there will be some snow to ski.

-So what is closer to the slopes town or village?

-What is closer to bars town or vilalge?

-What is closer to a grocery stores town or village?

Mammoth isn't like a typical ski area. The town is basically the village. They do have a village that is situated basically off-hill. In thanksgiving you will not be able to ski to the village and the gondola will do you no good. Don't stay in the village. Stay in town, the Vons is in town and the town isn't big at all.

The day before Thanksgiving (a wednesday) is typically when Eagle and Canyon Lodges open up, so you can take the Village Gondola to Canyon IF Canyon opens.

Alright so I'm looking on the map... Mammoth town is smack in the Inyo National Forest.

the town is about two miles across so really you are not the far from anything no matter where you stay.  There are some bars on old mammoth  road near vons but it seems that the village bars are more happening.

The whole mountain and town is in the Inyo National Forest. Actually, part of the mountain is private land, but if you stay in the village or Mammoth Lakes, skiing won't be too hard. You are close to the mountain wherever you are. The town is literally at the base of the mountain.
