Vintage Nikon F/newbie photographer

So I recently came into possession of a vintage late 50s/early 60s Nikon FTn. My grandad loves gadgets but never uses them, so I cleaned out his attic. I also got a sweet reel-to-reel Panasonic tape recorder, and a few other goodies as well.

But back on subject. I want to start shooting with this thing, and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on working with old SLRs. I'm not sure how many people know how an SLR works anymore what with all the digitals out there. But thanks a ton.

Also some pics. Note that I am not a photographer, and these were taken with my only other camera, an iPhone 4.

I mean once you learn one slr you learn them all, for the most part. Id give the camera a check out to make sure its all good.

replace the battery
check the lightseals
check the lens - make sure it actually stops down
check the aperture lever - make sure its snappy
make sure theres no mold/fungus in the lens
fire the camera with the back open - make sure the mirror and curtain open and close
make sure the film winder advances the film properly

last but not least go buy a cheap roll of film and test it out and make sure its working properly - dont shoot anything of importance.
