Just got my first motorcycle.

So I just picked up my 2008 Suzuki GS500F a few days ago.  It's my first bike and this thing kicks some ass.  From the second I got it home I could not resist to plaster the thing in NS stickers.  What do youguys think, did I over do the stickers a bit?  Some people say I did, but I think there are not too many, and they go with the bike nicely.

thanks man, but I have no idea on how fast it can go.  I'm still on my permit so I ride with my dad for the time being.  I can give you an update later though in a week or two when I'm on it alone.

yeah my parents were the same way, they did not want me on a crotch rocket.  But if you look in the lower cc class of bikes you are not really leaning over, or laying down on the bike.  Mine is a 500 and I sit almost upright.  There is a little bending over but not much(no homo).   Here is a picture of my dad on his BMW and me.  You can see how upsirght you sit on that bike.

Yeah I'd definitely go with a little more than a t-shirt. I don't feel comfortable without a padded jacket. Just think about falling at 60mph, or remember that there are people out on the road with you like that guy in the "Hit and run" video just posted.

this bike isnt really a "crotchrocket" it looks like one but u barely lean forward on it. its a pretty cool bike but my sister has had one for a few months and already wants the 650 so u might find it lacks a little speed once you have rode for a while and built up some experience

Nice! I ride my ass off. I put over 3k on my '06 GSXR 750 this year, it's been so dry I only drive my car when I need to haul shit I can't fit in my pack. For god's sake tho, get some gloves with riveted palms. That way when they hit pavement they slide and the leather doesn't just rip back and grind your palms off when you instinctively put them down to break a fall. That shit is gross.

I ride with these. Your mom loves 'em and they will also allow you to punch someone's side mirror off with no damage to yourself, which is nice.

i dont know why youre always talking about falling...if you think youre gonna fall then you will...i had a 07 honda 600 and rode it hard for 2 years without any falls or accidents...if youre scared of the bike then youre most likely gonna fall...pretty much like skiing

That's not the right mentality man. I agree, it is like skiing. I don't think C.R. was thinking about getting his head injury. Don't be stupid. Bad things can happen when you take risks to have fun. Wearing protection can help simple things like keeping you from getting bruised up from a fall, or serious ones like helping avoid a life threatening injury. Just because you made it 2 years without a fall doesn't mean anything. Good for you. What about the guy who got T-boned and killed by a drunk driver the first day he ever went out on his new bike?

You can pull examples for almost any case. But the facts are that you open yourself to some terrible accidents sometimes, and there is nothing wrong with using some smart protection that has been proven to increase your odds of staying safer.

Coming from someone who started riding motorcycles on the road as a pretty young teenagers. Be careful looking back I had done some royally stupid shit being the normal dumb teenage boy. Also a jacket and best helmet you can afford to buy. Last always ride as defensive as possible on the road there are so many people who never look out for riders and you will have alot of close calls. Other then that motorcycles are the fucking best have fun and be safe.

if thats your first bike, and you didnt ride before hand, you better be friggin carefull.

i've had two friends be stupid and buy sportsbikes like that for their first bikes and they both ended up in the hospital.

not hatin, just givin you some advice man. cuz the amount of error in those clutches is sooo small, and super easy to pop clutchs on. also, just riding in general, blindspots riding interstates, intersectings, everything man.

best advice my dad's ever given me for this is..
ride like no one sees you.

ride safe man. just enjoy riding, and do it safely. best of luck duude

I sold both my bikes this year. The cruiser and the crotch rocket.

Have fun, don't be an idiot. Safe driving is important with cars, but on a bike it's even more important. Even the smallest crash can fuck you up. Be safe, have fun.


And yes, plaster that thing in ns stickers.

to the OP, get rid of all of the fairings, toss on some clubmans or clipons, strip all your auxiliary lighting (turn signals, etc) hit the tank with a satin black spraypaint, and you'll have an awesome looking bike. oh and if you live in a state that isn't california, do something awesome with the exhaust too, like going with a straight pipe setup, with some sort of setup to get the right amount of back pressure so you don't lose power. lately I've been spending almost as much time on chopcult as on here, and love seeing any bike mixed up a bit

GS5s are nice bikes to start on, but start choppin it and people will make fun of you.  All.  Day.  Long.  The first fucking douchebag I see who takes his blinkers off to look cooler is getting kicked over at the next light.  You know they make flush mounts, right?   

Just ride the fkn thing, and again it can't be said enought- get some leathers and a SNELL (Not just DOT) approved helmet.

good call on the SNELL recommendation, but flush mounts only work on certain applications. hand signals work just fine, and are way better than all of the idiots I see on the highway who will leave their signal on for miles at a time. thats how people get hit, because the people around them decide that the signal isn't on for any reason. but back to OPs bike, that thing could look so much better stripped down. going for a streetfighter look would be awesome, especially with the standard riding position.

I can see the naked thing, but removing the blinkers is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard and no, flush mounts work for anything you just have to mount them slightly differently for different applications.  Reflectors, ok.  Blinkers?  No way man.  Besides, I wouldn't recommend a newb to signal with his hands- probably better to keep them both on the bars while he's slowing down/turning, y'know? 

Please don't tell anyone else that blinkers cause accidents.  If that's your rationalization, good for you but its not true so don't tell people that- especially new riders!

it would look even better if it had some clip ons instead of the stock bars, and some sort of mirror that doesn't look like an ants antennae.


and to guy above that, I'm not saying signals cause accidents, but especially with a new rider, they leave them on for extended periods, which is very annoying, distracting, and potentially dangerous. I've been just fine for several years riding with hand signals only, and I feel much safer signaling, checking the lane, and riding over than I feel riding around the tons of people who just flip their turn signal on and bust into another lane without so much as a look over their shoulder.

i think it would be easier to go with lower bars then going the clip on route. it really depends what he wants to do with this bike. short rides or long trips.

for more aggressive, renthal bars are good and can be had on ebay.

I think you should listen to DoWorkSon, he know's what he's talking about. if I saw anyone throw a straight pipe on a GS500 to "keep the right back pressure", I would give them endless amounts of shit. completely unnecessary on starter bikes like that. and flush mounts can honestly just be superglued on (like mine are) in any application. and I've never had the problem of leaving my turn signal on for miles at a time, and I've DEFINITELY never heard of that causing any accidents.


to the OP, good choice on a starter bike. haters may hate because it's not a true "crotch rocket" or it's not a "man's bike", but you need to start somewhere, and your safest route is on a sub 600 like you got. my friend just got a Ninja 250 which is a little too slow, so this should be perfect for you. my first bike was an '03 CBR600RR and I've never laid it down or been hit on it (I've had it for about 5 years now, since junior year in high school) despite all the nay sayers telling me I was gonna get myself killed. so as long as you drive safely, then you really shouldn't let what other people say about getting taken out by other drivers scare you. people statistically drive more safely around motorcycles because of the increased opportunity of killing them should they hit them. just remember to have a good time out there!

oh and for shits, here is my bike (CBR600RR) in front of my buddy's bike (R6) crammed in my garage
