Boulder wildfire

All of you NS'ers from boulder have to be dumb not to have seen or smelled the smoke by now
but for the rest of you, there is a pretty large wildfire just outside of Boulder that has already burned down a bunch of homes and is threatening a whole bunch more, including iggyskier's house
over 1,000 homes have been evacuated

it looks humongous from up in Ft. Collins. There's just a wall of smoke coming from the mountains.

but there were like no trees there, and the resort guy said it was only expected to get worse.

Dont know if any of you remember or knew of a resort here in idaho, Tamarack, but they had to turn on the snow machines about 2 weeks ago to help keep the fire down

crazy. i live in montana and we have a lot of beetle kill. and from what i can tell, we really lucked out in not having an intense fire season. the rain kept it down, but there is a lot of dead trees waiting to go up

went up to flagstaff mt to check it out and it was crazy. it was a few miles away from where i was standing and you could see the flames popping up out of the forest everywhere. apparently a propane blew up and started the whole thing

yeah i literally typed that and headed over to stearns west immediately where i was disappointed to find a tiny little orange glow. needless to say i was bummed out.

ahhh i would be on this fire making bank if i didnt have to go back to school. but anyway. heres the site we (forest service fire crews) use to look at whats going on in the nation. (updated daily in the morning) its the four mile canyon fire. 3000 acres. 0% contained. http://www.nifc.gov/nicc/sitreprt.pdf

bumping this,
a few friends have already lost their houses, and i hear its still not under control
today at school the principal and the social worker were going around telling people their homes have been lost, its pretty sad to watch

i'm going out tonight to take some pictures and video, i'll post what i see

was up there Monday night...along with everyone else and their brother, shit was packed! even up until 11pm there were at LEAST 70 people there

I live in Evergreen Colorado and the air was thick and hard to breath during cross country practice. But not near as bad as any school near boulder my heart goes out to the missing people and all of the people who lost their homes.

fuck, i just typed out like two paragraphs in response to this but my internet cut out as i was posting it. the pine's will likely largely die out in the coming decade and the forests will look vastly different, possibly even non-existant for a while, being replaced by rangeland. however, most pine species thrive off of disturbances, especially fire. with all those dead trees/timber (technically called snags), the forests will for sure be back. just not for a while. on the bright side, the lack of trees will help increase water yield. i had a lot more typed out about this so i'm probably missing stuff but i have too much homework to go on right now. basically, it may be asthetically unapealling for a while but everything goes in cycles. most tree species need the older trees to be killed to regenerate.


as for the boulder fire, i live in fort collins and the smoke was pretty thick up here yesterday and that's nearly 60 miles north.

good progress was made today, it is now said to be 40% contained, but the wind is picking up a whole lot which is not good at all.
the count of houses burned is now 169
a large portion of boulder, west of broadway, is supposed to be ready to evacuate if the wind continues

it's okay. not nearly as beautiful as the area where the 2002 Hayman fire burned. and that burned an area bigger than the state of rhode island

yes, but there was a lot more fire mitigation done to the boulder area than where the Hayman fire was. regeneration will happen much much faster in this fire than for the Hayman one. beauty is subjective. forests often need fire for healthy regeneration to keep the biodiversity up, it just sucks for the people with houses in the way.
