i have one of those heads though, and they are great. it sounds like your camera might be a tad big though.

weight wise the 701 can hold about 8 pounds and the fx7 with battery is 4.7 pounds

I'm just saying that if I was using a camera that size, I'd rather use a 501. I think it would feel a tad nicer, you know?

I have a 501 head and I'm looking into legs, and even though I cant use it yet, I'm glad I got a tripod first, I only do followcams a bit and a tripod is so useful outside of skiing

I have an older version of the 501 head its wonderful, I would look into the 351mvb2 sticks, there pretty beefy but really nice

get a tripod, and if u want a steady cam, extend the tripod neck all the way, and open up the legs and pull them 1/2 way out, grab the neck and run! it works surprisingly well

there are a lot of main differences(and hundreds of smallers ones).
the big ones are how much weight they can hold, build quality, longevity of the product, and how smooth the pan and tilt is

and ones from best buy rely on friction, or lack of, to move which can be very rough and not that precise, whereas the more expensive ones use fluid, so like he said you get a much much more smoother and more precise movement

a 30 dollar one is made of plastic, feels cheap, works like shit, and will disappoint you in every way.

I know 30 dollar tripods are garbage (been there done that...) but please explain how $200 heads such as manfrotto's "will disappoint"?

Steve, no one on here, generally, will be disappointed with a $200 head. I love my tripod setup, and the whole thing cost about $200 (although I'm upgrading fairly soon). Don't forget the audience here - this isn't DVXuser where everyone is informed and actually looking to make money on their work. This is much less intense than that, and the kids whose questions you're answering don't need more than a $200 tripod, let alone a $200 head.

Once you get into it more and get a bigger budget, THEN you can move up.

telling NS'ers to invest in a quality tripod is like telling kids on Skateperception to stop using fisheyes.

The thing about tripods, is that you never realize how shitty they are until you use a nice one. My 501 head is great and all, but nowadays I seriously find it holding me back. I think I may just bite the bullet and buy a Miller setup.

Bogen/Manfrotto is great entry level, but if you're going to spend a lot of money on a workhorse tripod, look elsewhere.

little bit of a thread jack but i need a new fluid head tripod for as cheap as possible. i wil use it for skiing barmitzvahs biking stuff like that. i found this one and it seems good. i want at least a tripod that can hold about ten pounds. has to have fluent motions.

those tripods are designed to look beefy and professional so that people who don't know anything about tripods will think they're getting a good deal...until they actually use it.

If you spend under $200, you're not going to be happy with your purchase. this I can guarantee.

i know but i am trying to get somethingto last me about 6 months or until i can get a nicer $500 ish one. what is worse about this compared to say a 501 head or 701 head. i am looking into those too. please enlighten me

just got the manfrotto 701 head with 190xdb legs
as well as a indislidermini

probably going to get a glidecam 2000 around christmas aswell as some new glass

Ohhhh Milos. I lack the energy to respond fully, but I'll say this. Buy once, cry once. Buy cheap, you end up with a mediocre piece of metal (probably plastic actually).

Kids on here can "get away" with cheaper tripods, but I was only pointing out that they'd eventually relise that a cheap tripod limits filmaking abilities. For lockoffs and very BASIC pans a Bogen should do just fine.

so as not to clog it up with more threads, ill ask here.

im not going to shell out 200 bucks for a tripod. sorry its just not going to happen.

im looking for a decent tripod for mainly photo use but some video as well. needs to be no more than 100 bucks head and legs. anyone have any recommendations. and please dont tell me to go get a manfrotto. i know they are better, i just cant fit that in my budget, especially considering how much id use it.

oh and it needs to hold about 8 lbs for my 400.

I'm not trying to be a 8D (choad). I just want kids to realize how important good sticks and heads are. They drop all this money on their HVX or whatever and then they buy a cheap tripod. A shakey/choppy shot doesn't look too appealing, no matter how good the camera may be. I prefer the "handheld" look over the look of a mediocre tripod.

I agree. However, I think we're talking about two different classes here. I was directing toward the people with HV40s/smaller cameras/"starter" NS cameras - not like you and me ;) If you have a camera like the HVX you should know what kind of tripod will do the job - if not, you shouldn't have that camera.

For the record, though, I think even with my DVX the 701 has done fine - my pans my not be PERFECT but they come out fine for me.
