Ankle problems + skateboarding

hey gaiz,
balblabla searchbar, i know
i somehow think about getting into skateboarding, have enough time and a little park around the corner where i live during the year.
BUT i have a bad ankle. broke it once, had surgery and its pretty much back to 98% or so, but i definitely dont want to start something that is extraordinarily bad for them.
i do all sorts of skiing, biking, soccer, a little climbing, slacklining and dont experience problems there (no surprise with skiing and biking though), if that helps.
BOTTOM LINE: is skateboarding very bad for ankles?
and another question, how long does it take to do like a 3 or 5 in skiing terms? like a level where its not just depressing all the time and you can do some fun stuff?

just use your good ankle as the foot you push with, but if it starts feeling bad then stop.

yeah depressing is not the right word. but i loved skiing 10 times more when "we" finally could hit 30+ ft with more than just a straight air.

its hard to say how quick u will progress. i tried skateboarding a couple summers ago and just couldnt get it. i could shuv it and 50 50 on ramp coping but thats as far as i got and some people could do all that in a week or less

i think that you dont have too much control when your crash/mistime a trick about how and where you land, especially with the board being somewhere in between?? or is that not that big of a deal?
as i said, i play soccer 3 times a week and sometimes you just roll your ankle a little, but if its not a lot worse, i might give it a try.

I have atrocious ankles and I longboard every day and they hold out quite well, I'm pretty decent at skateboarding as well and my ankle is fine. As for comfortable with tricks, I'd say once you learn to land kickflips that opens a whole new area of tricks.

yes skateboarding is bad for the ankles. My friend went to see a doctor the other day, and he apparently has the ankles of a 40 year old man, and is developing arthritis because of the amount he skates.

Its possible for skating to wreak havoc on your ankles if your not careful/your unlucky. I know people who have messed up their ankles pretty good doing it, and now it will happen every so often since. really bad ankle rolls, to the point of fractures and breaking seem to be pretty common. just take it easy, dont go hucking yourself down 12s right off the bat and youll probably be okay.

Skateboarding is bad for your ankles. I quit skating so my ankles could heal for skiing.

thx so far. i might try to start a little as a transportation thingy, just cruising around getting a feel and stuff.
and on the first bad roll i have to stop, no problem...

just get some good shoes that support your ankle. and the only problem i have with skating is with my leading foot. i get mad bruises on the end of my foot/start of my toes from kicking out when doing ollies etc, but it probably differs from each person. long story short, you should be sweet

damn, use a little finesse, bruising your foot from kicking an ollie, haha
OP, don't get some huge fuckin' skate shoes. Low profile shoes give you much better control and feel, but skateboarding is pretty hard. You'll roll your ankles, pull your groin, bloody your knees and elbows and probably still not be able to ollie up a curb.

you sound like someone who just made a desperate attempt at an insult to make yourself look better than me. you ended up sounding like a douche for making fun of my technique, which you have never witnessed. and i said ect, as in every move that requires a kick from my front foot. fail

oh yea so desperate!!! dude, either way, kickflip, ollie, if you're bruising your toes you're doing it wrong. And honestly if that really is your technique I doubt you're doing very many "sweet moves that require a kick from your front foot". Poser.

haha shut the fuck up. stop twisting my words. honestly dude you're trying to pick at something that you know nothing about (when i say that i mean the situation with my foot, not your general skating knowledge), and its a little embarrassing. you are assuming all these things when you dont have solid facts. and there you go again putting yourself on your little pedestal. get off your high horse, you egotistical fuck.

Quit kicking your skateboard so hard, or don't, whatever, it's just funny you bruise your toes, that's all really. You didn't need to get so defensive.
