Xbox and computer off of one ethernet port- how to piggy back xbox wireless from mac

pretty simple. 1st year residence, got hex box going, got internets going too.

but, with only one ethernet port, and two internet needing devices, idk what to do

if anyone knows of a way I can easily and efficiently piggy back my xbox wireless from my mac, that would be very nice

other than that, if there's a way to idk, split the ethernet port with some kind of splitter, that would be sick too.




basically, need two internets from one. go.

as for me, I'd rather keep things less complicated and cheaper. your post made no one but your self sound stupid or "retarded", as per this analogy; your post would be like saying "are you guys retarded? anyone heard of a car?" If I had asked "how can I get from one city to another. Some people financially aren't able to support certain endeavors. I'm lucky enough for that to not really be a problem, but still, why buy a router if I can do it for free, ya digg?

that dude your hating on is on the right track. but dont use a router, just a cheap switch or hub, no need to set it up, then you got like 4 to 8 ethernet ports!

easy way to hook up a printer and if you get more shit that needs it your in business!

why not have your mac on wireless and plug the xbox in to the port?

i know i said im looking for the splitter, which would still most definitely be cheaper than the router, but really, more than anything i want to find a way to do it for free.

I know you can do it with a PC, and i can run bootcamp and parallels, but i'm not going to all that trouble every time I want to play video games

That router in the link is more than perfect for your needs and it will last you a long time - it's damn cheap and you will not have to hassle with any cables ever again thanks to WLAN, I underline my advice to purchase it, you'll be happy.

Create a bridge from your computer to your xbox.


I can post the info on it later but it shouldn't be hard to do it, because it is called a "bridge"

Where your computer would be receiving the internet as a "wireless adapter" and then it would also be able to send the internet to your xbox.

I've used it loads of times for college.


A router is also a great way to.

Or get a wireless router and a wireless adapter for your xbox (not the $100 xbox one, a $20 regular ethernet one)

some work, you will also need a usb extension cable or something because the wireless adapters that look like zip drives won't fit in the xbox slot, there's not enough room

but this is all beside the point-

you've all given me great advice and options for fixing my problem, so thank you for that. but, like i said before, if I can find a way to do it FOR FREE instead of paying money for a router, that would be good.



this thread was more than anything to throw a question out to NSG to see if anyone else dealt with this problem in the same way and fixed it.

This. You do not need to buy a router. Just connect your computer and Xbox via ethernet cable when you want to play. With a bridge set up the Mac will be a wireless receiver for your Xbox at no cost to you.

Or you could... you know... switch the cable from your computer to your Xbox when you want to play online. That's what I do. Takes two seconds, assuming you don't have your Xbox in an enclosed area which you shouldn't anyways because of cooling reasons.

You need to get an ethernet switch. It's like a router, usually less expensive, and allows you to connect multiple devices to the same plug without diminishing the quality. The splitters do just that, split, so the internet connection will be cut in half to each device, but with a switch, you'll be able to keep the quality and still split it up. Also, I know switches work with dorms where as some dorms don't allow routers.

If you live in a dorm a router wont work. I had your exact same problem last year, tried using a router but my schools internet wouldn't authorize it. May work at your school tho, good luck.
